I went to the Harley dealer in Santa Maria CA yesterday to trade in my 2012 FLTRX. Wow!! $38K for a Road Glide Limited. So now I'm looking to upgrade my 2012 that has 70,000 miles. I'm a highly capable A&P mechanic. I want to pull the motor, tear it down and do a killer build. I would like to go with 107 cylinders, high compression pistons, a hefty set of cams (maybe geared), heads, bigger throttle body. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.
I would talk to fuel moto for some ideas.i have 50000 miles on 2011-due to some issues with the 110 I would put new bearings in lower end.i look at my age-71-and wonder where i'll be in 5 or 10 years-for me the cost of new engine would be less than difference in new bike-maybe--good luck
definitely less money to upgrade your engine, and you have myriad possibilities on that front. but just out of curiosity, what did you expect to spend on a new bike, and what did the dealer do to justify a $10,000 price increase over msrp?
He was a little arrogant to begin with. When I asked why is the price more than what is advertised on the HD website he began to show me all the listed BS on the price tag. His final remark was "that's the price". Pretty much, like it or leave it. Thinking of test riding a Gold Wing.
Hi Drjones, maybe check out the new Indian Challenger. It is liquid cooled, 122 horsepower off the floor, mono rear shock, comfortable and the Dark Horse version is $28k.
I would definitely email ALL the managers at that joint and tell them of the smug salesman. Is that the only dealer near you? Have you bought stuff from them in the past? Good luck with your next moves bud.
Was out in Cali in '16 and stopped at a couple of dealers. They all had the sales tax included in the price on the tag they put on them . Was a little scary at first as none of the dealers around here do that.
Lots of options out there , doing the work yourself ?? look at the S&S 107 , think it's 10.5 CR , comes with pistons and cylinders , around $1100 I thinketh , gear drive cams around $700 or so ..
that said, i just had (at 18K miles) a major rebuild done under warranty due to what i think is oil pump issues.
(the dealer was rather vague about why it happened so i can only guess it was lack of lubrication at the front exhaust lifter)
i've had no sumping issues, no transfer to primary problems, no other problems whatsoever.
unless it happens again, i can say i am thoroughly impressed with this M8 powerplant.
i have a 113 S+S (evo) in my '94 heritage and it's a hoot to ride.
it has a peaky powerband, and runs hotter than anything else i own.
but it's not nearly as efficient as the M8.
the M8 is simply a joy to drive!!!
you don't have to wind it out to get it moving, short-shifting makes it so easy to get up to speed.
on the highway in 6th gear you can loaf along at 65 or do kamikaze runs on cages at 100+, makes no difference to this engine.
I would check another dealer. 38K is way above sticker unless they have a bunch of dealer installed options on it. I just got a limited today with traction control. Sticker was just under 34K. I got it for just under 30K. Im in Illinois in a corn field so that may be some of the difference.
Yeah...from Canada here...went to the dealer cuz I wanted a new Road Glide... I was trading my RK...as soon as the idiot sales guy opened his mouth I could tell he was trying to swindle me...he had 1000 excuses why he couldn't give me a certain amount of money for my bike. I asked him why he couldn't help me with a better price on a new RG? It is what it is as it was put to me...take it or leave it...so I left it..Dealer is in Ottawa Canada... won't ever go there again. I bought a used 2013 RG and I am very happy with it. I am gonna likey do the motor at some point to give me more juice all around.
I am so sick of these entitled people trying to sell bikes. The dealers ( in my experience) are all about raping you...maybe there are some great dealerships out there but I haven't had that experience yet. Glad you said "NO" to that salesperson. F*** em. Everybody should come away feeling good when they spend that kinda money. You shouldn't feel violated. Good luck with the engine build!!!
Put a SE 110 Tire Shredder kit on top and a set of S&S wheels in the cases 120/120 easy. 130+ with the right pipes and tuner.
