Question Need advice on heads??? Any help appreciated!

I have a 97" S&S running 570G EZ start cams. Its time to do some head work... I have two sets of heads that I can send in, both sitting on my shelf. Looking for simply a good flowing set of heads, nothing big on the valves, trying to maintain intake velocity, lastly shooting for a 10:1 compression ratio, which is supposed to be ideal for my cam.

Some might say screw them both and buy the S&S Heads, but S&S has stated this isn't an option for my combonation. Their only option would be their C&C service, and if I'm going to do that, I'd rather just send the set of heads to a quality builder that supports our forum and community.

First set: 2001 Heads - very good condition, roughly 5k miles on them.

Second set: 2006 Heads & matching intake - ok condition, around 30k on them.

I know that the mileage really doesn't make a difference because I plan to have the heads completely gone thru. I've been told that the '06 are more desireable due to flow characteristics. Others have told me the ports are too big on the '06, and the '01's are better to go with... Some say the valve seals are better in the older heads... shit I don't know.

I have absolutely no friggin' idea.... please help.

Your best bet is to call one of our many site supporters and talk to them with your goals in mind. They can recommend your options.

Hillside, Fuel Moto, and Dewey's comes to mind.
Many, many others as well.

There are so many different scenario's that you can do that it isn't funny. Here is what I did. I took my stock 01 heads and I had those redone. I put a 1.90 intake and a 1.625 exhaust Ferra valves. I had beehive springs installed along with keepers, seals etc. I had some port work done as well. I had no need to install new guides, nor seats. I just had those stoned.

From what I have heard about the 06 heads is that they are a better head design not a worse one than the 01 heads. the 06 heads have the 7mm valve guild installed already which is better for strength. I do believe that the flow characteristics of the 06 heads are better as well.

I have a 98" build and am pushing over 100 h.p. and over 113 ft. lbs of torque with my 01 heads. There just isn't as much that needs to be done with the 06's as there is with the 01's.

By the way, if you want "good flow," bigger valves are part of the equation.

BlackDangerous - Don't get me wrong, I know that I'm going to need a bigger valve, simply not HUGE. Your choice on the 1.90 & 1.625 is what I'm planning, just not bigger than that.

the `06 heads would be a better choice (raised intake & way better flowing exhaust).we use alot of the .570`s on our 95" builds.with proper 1.900/1.615 headwork,110/110+ is attainable.

A head that rolls off 150 cfm @ 10" will fit that combo nicely.

earlier heads have more material to reshape the exhaust into a D shape.

Intake does not matter

hmmmm,"intake dosnt matter"well i beg to differ,intake is VERY important(BTW,what is the pic on your post?a example of your headwork??).if you thinking of haveing the heads completly worked,the year of head isnt as important as if your just doing some mild work done,then the later heads are by far the best choice.(like i said earlier).use 1.900 intakes & 1.610 exhaust.

My camera tends to give pictures the same photo number,was supposed to be a picture of a D shaped exhaust port.

Ill fix that later

The intake port early or late can be ported to flow the same numbers...does not matter....I prefer the early exhaust port because you can reshape it.
