Fairing Factory Razor Tour Pac - Gel coat passes for paint?

So I'd read a comment by someone, can't remember who or where, who stated they'd bought a tour pac from someone and that the gloss black gel coat was "good enough" to pass for painted. It kinda stuck in my mind and I've been looking to pick up a razor tour pack as my king tour pac while nice is just not visually attractive. I find the razor to be almost stylish and would be a great backrest for the girlfriend.

I saw the eBay ad for the Fairing Factory razor tour pac

Fairing Factory Razor Tourpak Tourpack Tour Pak Pack for Harley Davidson Touring | eBay

and since they were only about 30 mins from me I messaged them to see if I could come down and see one for myself in person. They said no problem and I made an appt on a Sat to go.

I showed up and he unboxed one. I'll have to say I was impressed.

Now I was pretty impressed with my painted Mutazu King tour pac but since I've blacked out my bike I intended to go with black hardware on the razor tour pac as well. And since no-one sells a tour pac set up with black hardware I was left with ordering it all seperatly and assembling it myself.

At $149 I think it's the cheapest on eBay. I would have to say that it IS 90% as nice looking as my painted Mutazu. It does have a couple of minor scuffs...and I'm assuming that they won't buff out, but who knows maybe it will. It looks like the amount of scuffs you'd expect to see on a tour pac that's used anyways.

They also sold me a leather pad for $80 but I just may go with a super slim one from CC Motorcycle seats, I haven't decided yet. Here's a couple pics.

You can see that there is plenty of gloss and plenty of reflection in the pics and to my eye it looks painted. Just a heads up for anyone considering it.

Here's some more pics for comparision. The razor is gelcoat only and the king tour pac is painted vivid black. Pretty impressive.

That does look nice. If it's a true gel coat , you should be able to rub blemishes out like on a boat. On gel , the color goes on first.

Thanks! I'll give it a shot with a little polishing compound and report back.

You got me thinking....I keep calling it gelcoat...is it gelcoat? It's not fiberglass...it's ABS so what else could it be? They wouldn't shoot a clear coat over black....or would they? Hmmmm, I'll update when I get around to trying polishing compound.

Yeah, it doesn't get any cheaper. Although the complete hardware set in black, including everything you need like the cable, gasket, lock, hinges etc ran me $180. So like $320-$330 total? It also came with the steel plate for the bottom for reinforcement. Hard to beat.

Try polishing on an inconspicuous area first.

After doing all the math, unless you require the black hardware it'd be cheaper to buy the complete Mutazu setup that is painted. You can get that for $368 shipped. I spent $140 for the upper and lower, $180 for the black hardware kit and $80 for the pad. So $400 total and mine is unpainted. Painted would have run me about $500 total. So a good savings for me cause I only wanted the black hardware but not so much if chrome is acceptable for you.
