F Me, my saddlebag came off!

Grrrrrrr, riding to work this morning, doing about 50 and getting ready to let off the gas for the next light.............when all of the sudden I hear........scraaaaaaaaaape as SOMETHING is sliding down the road almost right next to me.

F**K!

So I dive into the left turn lane I'm passing and look into my mirror to see my right side saddlebag sliding down the road. I make a quick UTurn and jam back half a block......make another quick U Turn and race back.

I pulled into a drive, jumped off the bike and yep.....it's still there and nobody had hit it. I went out into the street and picked it up. My anger is now starting to turn into embarrassment.

I had the bags off this weekend when I installed the bag extensions. I'm using security torx to hold them on and I remember tightening up....at least one bag. (I remember using a ratchet) I don't remember doing both. I think at this point it's obvious I didn't fully tighten it up, which is almost inconceivable that I would start them and not finish tightening them. But that must be what happened.

So on close inspection.......it slid on the face the whole way......at least it didn't tumble, and the bag is unscathed. I ground on the extension, the lid and the latch.

I called Mutazu and they will sell single pieces. Half the price of a set plus $20 per item. So if I want to buy a lid and extension from them.....I'm looking at about $150 plus about $30 for latch covers off eBay.

Looking at it again.....I think I can probably touch up the lid.....it only made contact at two points, rattle can and it should be fine. That'll lower my out of pocket to about $110 ish.

Hmmmm. Not how I wanted to start my week, but I guess it could have been worse!

That sucks. Luckily it was not hit, which could have easily happened.
I'm going down to the garage to check my bags right now!

I can't even imagine the thoughts going through your head as your bag is sliding next to you on the road. I know it isn't funny at all, and I am really happy that it didn't tumble or get hit but......the only thought I have in my head right now are those cartoons or shows where a trailer comes un-hitched and is riding down the road next to the vehicle that was supposed to be towing it.

I wouldn't worry about fixing it. I think it looks pretty cool and has a lot of character. I would just slide the othe bag down the driveway to see if you can make it match and call it your theme. Some course sandpaper in certain spots on the other painted tins and you're set. You could do that for a whole lot less money than fixing the bag plus it would be different. 😜

Been there and done this one....had a bag pass me up in a corner. Best solution is to drill the bolt and put a pin in it that way they don't vibarate loose.

Oh man...I can feel the pain. S*it happens and it happens when you least expect it. The best thing I can think of is sharing a another story of real pain!
I remember a few years back when I didn't have a factory alarm or some fancy rotor lock. I only had a heavy chain and a padlock.
So – I had over-slept and was in a hurry to get back on base to avoid a chew out from my CO. You can imagine what happend next, let's just say that I got a brutal stop...

Sorry to hear about the bag. It's bad when they fall, off due to some mechanical failure but when it's our own fault then it's much worse. Like what was said before at least it was not hot by another vehicle.

I bought the knob with 3/16" stud sticking out of it and nut clips at Lowe's. I put one on each front mounting point and the regular pin on the back. Best of both worlds I feel. Cheap too. Man, sorry about the bags. That really sucks. Last year my new RG feel off the kick stand in Sturgis. No, I wasn't toasted, lol. A small screw had fallen off my buddies RG two days before. Didn't know it but it bounced up and fell in the hole where the kickstand locks in place. It finally worked it's way to the bottom and bingo, I put the kickstand down, get off the bike, and bam, two seconds later it falls into a brick column. Luckily it hit right on the tip of the bars and then the crash bar caught it. No damage at all. WHEW!
