J&P Cycles

I read that J&P cycles had gone into bankruptcy.

Is there any truth in this?

They have certainly stopped shipping to South Africa.

The group that owns them, MAG, filed last week. Chap 11.

The papers list a strange group of investors/managers to see them thought to the end. One is a chap 11 manager. One is known for pump and dump. And the third is prolly after some of the high end names that MAG owns.

If it all goes balls up, there will be some big names gone from the industry. And unless the economy turns and people start spending on scooters again, there is a better than fair chance that it all goes bust. Borrowing from Peter to pay Paul just buys time. At some point you need to start turning a profit.

It's just too bad - I have purchased a lot of parts over the years from J&P. I have always been very happy with their stellar customer support and service. But then the company did some major retooling (moving their warehouse - IRC) and they suffered some set-back with "tons" of backorders. I had to wait several weeks for my order to ship - it was so frustrating that I went back to DK.
It's really sad if J&P go belly-up...

The new world order, everything going Eco or engineless. Can you imagine a Harley being quiet, gas-free, and riding down the road with a pocket liner full of pens... Just saying, no offence too those who carry Pocket liners for their pens....

not good. I do like going through their catalog and seeing all the goodies. Have ordered from them a few times too.

"MAG Files for Chapter 11

The Motorcycle Aftermarket Group (MAG) is not a name that motorcycle enthusiasts are usually familiar with, but the family of brands that the company owns certainly is: Performance Machine wheels, Roland Sands Design, Renthal handlebars, Vance & Hines exhausts, Tucker Rocky, J&P Cycles, etc. The network of brands has been struggling over the recent years though, and today we learn that many of them will be filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, while the overarching MAG Group business restructures its debt and finds new ownership. While this is not the sexiest news story to happen in the motorcycle industry this year, it is certainly one of the most important and complicated. As such, we will try to break it down in a digestible way for you."

Not good for the industry. When a Chapter 11 entity reorganizes, all the suppliers have targets on their backs.
Hopefully someone will belly up to the bar and keep these businesses going.
With low interest rates, deals like this are attractive to some groups of investors.
Hopefully domestic...

I am not surprised at all. When you look at what PM or RSD wheels cost you are looking at over 3K for wheels for a motorcycle. High end wheels for cars don't cost that much. V&H exhaust $500 for slipon's $600 for headers. These prices are outrageous. J&P cycles prices don't compare with other sites like Revzilla. Progressive Suspension $600-$800 for rear shocks $500 for monotube fronts. I don't think people want to keep spending that kind of money on accessories for a motorcycle. Then when you factor in the cost of having HD or some Indy install the stuff, then it really becomes too expensive. Gone are the days where vendors can charge whatever they want for their products.

I think it might be better for the industry if some of these brands became independent again,or at least this conglomerate was broken up.what's hurting some of them is the proliferation of knock offs of many of the products.

J&P and DK did well back in the catalog mail-order days, but now they just can't compete with the discount places, amazon, etc.that have sprung up.They need to change their business model like everyone else if they are going to survive.

The moco needs to take note, their P&A is headed in the same direction,as has been said, they days of people just paying anything are gone.

I'll really miss some of these brands if they disappear, like progressive, mustang, kury, etc.

Don't see the manufacturers going out, but I definitely see some downsizing at some point, the prices some of these products go for are totally insane , I agree, that's why I bought from a smaller company like MGS when it came to mufflers, V&H, Rinehart and many others are ridiculously high, there is definitely going to be a scale back of some sort.

When all else fails, hell there is always beer!
