Sound out of primary

I know I haven't been here in awhile, comp been down, but over the past 4 weeks now, I've noticed a squealing coming from the side. It's very annoying especially when I have a vehicle or curb or K rail on the left hand side. Only when moving with clutch engaged. When I pull clutch while rolling, sound goes away. It's in every gear and sound pitch increases as I throttle up.

Took bike to dealer to my very trusted mechanic, and he stated that the sound is starting to show up in my particular year, 2010. Clutch is adjusted properly. Fluid changes normal, 24k miles....Using SYN3. They have no idea what is causing it. At my next service interval I'm gonna change to Severe Gear and see if the noise changes.

Anyone else have this issue at all? Or something similar?

Mine has had a "rattle" for lack of a better term at the front of the primary since day one , dont know it it's the primary or the bottom end .. stick yer head down there at idle and it's annoying ..

My rattle was the shifter shaft and shifter arm. Tightened the hell out of it and nothing....So the shaft and arm were replaced. The squealing is while riding, and not stationary....So the head trick ain't gonna work....

Nobody has an idea? Well the noise is getting worse...Sounds like metal on metal squealing with no lube. They checked it out and said nothing looks abnormal. I'm taking it in Mon and having them tear apart the tranny and primary. Another dealership thinks it might be the compensator.....

Had the exact same sound on my 05 w/58k. Went through everything on the bike and couldn't find any problems except some metal fillings on the primary drain plug. I believe the problem is the main bearing from tranny to clutch. No way to find out except pulling apart primary.$2000.00 Traded bike.

Inner Primary Bearing!

Sounds exactly like what I experienced with my 2006 Dyna Wide Glide.

Dynas got the 6-Speed Cruise Drive transmission in 2006. When mine was delivered I had to sign a paper that said I would return the bike to an authorized dealer every XX,000 miles for a free inner primary bearing replacement. Factory wanted to analyze the used bearings under actual riding conditions. I can't recall the exact mileage interval, but I think it was every 15,000 miles. (I could dig thru my files and look it up if it is important.) Six months after taking delivery I got a letter from the HD factory saying that there was no inner primary bearing issue and I could disreguard the free replacement interval letter.

A year later I started hearing a grinding noise, mostly at idle in neutral with clutch engaged. If I pulled the clutch lever in disengaging the clutch, the noise went away.

Long story short my dealer replaced the inner primary bearing under warranty

Problem solved. Bike has 20,000 miles on it now and no further issues.

This same thing just happened to a buddy of mine, who rides a 2011 FLTRX. a trusted mechanic of his tore down his primary and they discovered the clutch main bearing was toast. They replaced it and it's been fine. Fairly minor fix.

Thanks for the posting...I hear the clatter in neutral with the clutch pulled in...last week the dealer tightened the Compensating Sprocket & Clutch Basket...its back again after today's ride...so maybe its a bearing that is connected to the shaft that connects the clutch and tranny. Almost forgot to mention...2011 FLTRUSE

Thanks guys....Bike is back at the shop, and a buddy is looking at it...I've given them the analysis that you have shot at me, so they have a starting point to look at when he digs in...On a semi positive note, I also asked about a new front rim, Agitator 19" for my scoot...Well lookie here, a set of screamin eagle take offs just sitting here....$800 for the set with tires/rotors....

An update...Bike out of shop, dealer installed the wrong rims...Not the Agitators I told them I wanted...But some CVO rims I didn't much care for....New rim ordered from Southern-MC.com. But the sound is gone.

Turns out the belt and clutch were lose inside primary causing the squeal....Alls good now...But after riding the FatBoy for a week, hoping on my Glide was a fcking weird feeling...WOW!!!!!!
