Bad Rear Axle Brg?

2008 RG
What are the symptoms of a bad rear axle bearing? I'm pushing 50K and now I notice an odd sound from the rear @ 30 mph only. Zig-zaging has no effect but torque does. If I roll on or off the gas it will stop the noise. I figured you have had the most experience in the Axle Bearing Department.

Is it a squeaking sound? A belt that is too tight will chirp some. As far as the bearings, my rears went out at 27k and the front at 17k on my 08. If there is any doubt, pull the wheel and physically turn the bearings by hand. If you feel any drag or roughness in them replace them. Personally I would do all of them at once, but thats just the maintenance mechanic in me coming out. FYI there are three bearings in the rear. 2 in the rim and 1 in the IDS hub / pulley.

I had the rear axle bearing go out in my 08 at 16K. Try rolling the bike with the engine off and listen for noise, I had more noise on mine when I rolled the bike backwards. My bike was under warranty and I had the HD dealer do the work so I assume that the stock Chinese bearings were installed again but I have 30K on the rear bearings now and 46K on the front and no problems yet. If I had to do the work myself I would use Timken bearings instead of the bearings you would get from HD. If you have the extended warranty then let the HD dealer do the work.

I had a loud chirping/squeaking noise coming from what I thought was the clutch at ~30-40 mph after a 40 mile ride for breakfast. Got home and the bike was chirping occasionally at 10 mph and then would go away. Took the bike in and one of the rear bearings was replaced under warranty. Bike is a 10 TRX with 16K.

This is a sad commentary about HDs purchasing dept that treat bearings as a commodity....they save a couple of cents on buying cheap chinese bearings that simply fail well before they should.
