Please Help

On the shifter lever side of the transmission, there's a torx cap-screw beneath the engraved serial number of the case. What is the function of that cap-screw? What will happen if it backs out? See pic Thanks!

can't tell you the function, can tell you mine isn't backed out. Looks like you may have enough room to get pliers in there and tighten back up.

I think I've figured it out. It takes place of a locating pin that captures a spring on the shift lever/pawl assembly. The spring is what returns the toe or heal/toe foot lever back to center after you've up and down shifted. I could be wrong, but it seems MOCO replaced the pressed-in pin with this cap-screw to capture that spring and washer. It no wonder I had zero return on my 17,300 mile '15 RGS. You could hunt for your desired gear, but you won't know what gear you're in until you let out the clutch lever and the digital gear indicator lights up. And if the cap-screw lost its capture of the spring, then it can only mean that there's a washer loose somewhere in there

I'm basing this post on the symptoms of my shifting difficulties and on what I've been able to understand by looking through the shop manual.

This cap-screw is not on any of the sub-25,000 mile scheduled service maintenance checks...so...rider be aware!

Since it's still under warranty and I can't see the spring, washer, etc, I'm going to let moco deal with it. I hope the dealership does it correctly, by taking the necessary things apart to fix it. The washer is sandwiched between the spring and the cap-screw. I just don't see how the washer could still be on the tip of the cap-screw since I'm not getting any return which means the cap-screw has lost contact with the spring

I'm not a certified Harley mechanic or certified anything, really (ok...certified moto enthusiast who likes to ride LOTS), but I'm sure there's someone out there who knows these things better than me, so please chime in and let me know if I'm on the right or wrong trail with my guess of what's going on with this cap-screw, transmission, transmission lever arm, pawl assembly, and why my heel/toe foot lever doesn't return to center after I've completed a shift.

I suppose I could remove that chrome cover plate and take a look-see inside, right?

Yeah you should be able to see it .. It's under warranty and if they screw it up , it's still under warranty , and that's when you take it to another dealer ..

They will have to pull the primary to do it 'right' .. Give them a chance first , don't beat them up until they give you a reason ..
