Starter Problem 2001 RG TC88

I seam to have an issue, but only when its super cold, 20-30 Degrees! I turn the ignition on and wait for the fule pump to do its thing then when I hit the start button, I get nothing I hit it four or five more times and it clicks I hit it a few more times and it starts. I have replaced the starter relay. What else should I check?
Thanks
Jeff

Make sure all your wire connections on the charging system are clean & tight including the battery.
Also try tapping on the starter with a screwdriver handle while pushing the starter button, if tapping on the starter helps , it's time to rebuild the starter.

Sounds like you have a weak battery. How old is it? Take it to an auto parts store & have it load tested or use a multi meter with a probe on each battery terminal and crank the bike over. See what the voltage is. My guess is that you will see a substantial drop in voltage when doing this. Its taking more power to turn over that cold motor with thick, cold oil in it, so it probably wasn't that noticeable when it was warm outside. Start with the simple stuff first before tearing into the starter etc.

I know you said that already, but my 2001 EG did the same thing you are talking about, A LOT, it was ALWAYS the starter relay, I think I replaced it about 5 times, AND the brake light relay which is exactly the same relay, right next to it. scary part about that brake light relay is that you can go quite awhile before noticing your brake lights are out.

one way to diagnose is to swap your brake light relay with the starter one, I got to where I was carrying a spare, oddly enough its one of those few odd items that aren't more expensive at HD, their only like $4 or so, NAPA about the same.

This is second battery @50k same as first oem on FLTri, went weak @ 49k, ready to replace
This is how I do it, like jumping it
Good batt to starter and engine ground
Multi meter will reveal.....volts

Strange you bike randomly fired, most times I jump from bike to bike to maintain batteries
@13 to 14+ when running

Hi Lunchboox; that problem sounds eerily familiar. I have a 2001 SERG and I first changed the battery to a quality AGM-battery and replaced the stock single phase charging system (p.o.s.) with a 3-phase 40 amp (compu-Fire) and that did wonders for my "old eagle". JMO

Thanks for the Sugestions. I ordered starter rebuild kit last winter and a relay but after replacing the relay I never had the problem again till just the other day. I will swap the realys see if that helps. If not I wil take the battery and have it load tested.
