Stiff Ride

I just "upgraded" from an '04 to a 2010. The damn thing is so stiff that my wife won't ride it. I immediately put a hammock seat on it and it helped some. If I hit a small bump, like an expansion joint, the thing jams my back straight up into my head. It feels like a hard tail.

I have gone from 0 psi to 50 psi on the rear and everywhere in between. This thing doesn't ride nearly as good as the 2004. My dealer says it's just the new frame and suspension they put on the FLs in 2008. I can't believe it's this bad. It's so stiff that it's no fun to travel on. After 43 years of touring, I'm thinking of going back to something else.

It almost feels like it's bottoming out but the bumps aren't that severe - small bumps jolt me. I really think it's just stiffer than heck, which is probably why it corners so well. A chug hole rattles my brains. Is there any decent aftermarket solution?

I dont no of any aftermarket solution, they are out there, but ask your dealer(pressuming you bought new)to change rear suspension to 011 Roadglide Ultra suspension. I had a 2005 FLHTCSE2, low profile touring suspension, IT SUCKED! Did x-actly as you have described. Man I put a sidekick seat on my 2009.Its looks like a Ironing Board, lol, w/a little bit of flair. I put 45lbs. pressure in my rear shocks, and dude it GLIDES!

I've had great results with my Progressive 940 shocks.

Let me add one other thing, the guy who bought my 2005 FLHTCSE2 complained of the x-act same thing to the dealer I did my deal with, and they replaced the rear shocks at no cost to him. He said it took care of the problem! I dont no if there has been a problem w/these in paticular but from 2005 to 2010 I think they switched to a different low profile suspension.

The 2010 have a shorter shock than the earlier models and also the2011. Just chane the shoch to the longer one and you will be fine. Duane5157

I went from an 07 to a 2010 and experienced the same thing. My wife would be in pain after riding on the back and hitting bumps and dips. Take your tire pressure back down to 40 psi and put 27lbs of air into your rear shocks. It should make a huge difference!

More on Mike's Stiff Ride

At the advice of my dealer, I replaced the "short" shocks on the 2010 RG Custom with longer ones from another model (an Ultra Classic, I think). Anyhow, $426 later it rides just the same. I wish I would have spring for some Progressive 940s and tried them. I still might suck it up and order some 940s but I'm a little gun shy right now.

Based on how mine rides, I can't believe that there isn't a general uproar on how stiff these bastards are.

BTW BDMastiff, I normally run 40 PSI on both tires and even with the longer shocks, I tried shock pressures from 0 to 50 in 10-psi increments. Still jumps over expansion joints like a frigging pogo stick.

Has anybody tried changing the shock oil ? Put some real oil in there and get rid of that fish oil It sure made a difference on mine, they come stock with 5wt and I went to 10wt Motorex at 10.8 ounces. gives you a little bit better dampening.

I have the same issue. Going from my 06 FLH to my 11 FLT the ride is much harder. When I put ten psi in the rear like my FLH my FLT rides like crap. I have been running twenty psi. Its a bit better. Try bumping up the air in the back.
