Worn alternator rotor causing loose compensator
Figured Id share this, did a quick search and could not find it posted anywhere.
If you're having loose/noisy compensator issues check the alternator rotor face while you're in there.
I had knocking noise coming from the primary area for a while and I was having the starter stall, and loud clunk when you shut the bike off., etc. I just did the SE comp upgrade/fix about a year ago.
Anyways I called a mechanic friend and he said to check the alternator rotor for wear. Sure enough it had a deep grove worn in it, and it was enough to unload the spring pack and cause the noise, 62kmiles. The comp nut was still tight.
