be advised, if you price out a new engine make sure you take into consideration the needed upgrades that go hand in hand with it

Aircraft technician by trade......that doesn't make me a bike mechanic I know......but I have tools and know how to read a manual. I dropped the bike off at a shop where I know the owner/mechanic. I trust them.....they have always done excellent work for a fair price. The owner (Danny) called me the evening after I dropped the bike off....said no compression in the forward cylinder. It was decided that he would do a valve job, install forged pistons with good set of rings (5 over), new updated oil pump and inspect the gear driven cams and replace the cam bearings. Indicated he could do it all for less than $2000. Honestly, It is much easier for me to work a couple shifts of overtime and just get it done.
