You need to depress the button under the switch to remove the switch assembly. I know Jims sells the tool to realign everything, but I have been told its possible to do with a screwdriver. I have no firsthand experience aligning...ÖÖÖ.sorry, wish I could help

I know about the button. I successfully removed the switch. Thought everything was aligned correctly on reinstall. Went back in no trouble. It was upon the function check the trouble was found. Can press the button and turn the key to the removal notch but the switch is unable to be removed.

Update. I will have to purchase a whole new assembly. I went back out to the bike to see if I could get the gauge cluster off to get to the switch housing & found out if you remove the horseshoe you can remove the gauge cluster without removing the ignition switch. Two bolts and entire switch housing removed, which also includes the fork lock. There are visible cracks in the housing. I have had issues off and on with switch since my wreck in 15.

Expensive lesson learned, don’t remove switch to do handlebars.

I did not remove the key with switch
removed. No need to remove switch unless changing it out for color or rekey
