Electrical Trouble

My turn signals and brake light are not working. There is power to the turn signals and tail lamp because they are lit when I turn on the bike. But, the turn signals don't work when I use push the right or left signal switch and the brake light doesn't activate when I pull the front brake lever or push the brake pedal.

I replaced my handlebars and when I got everything put back together, I noticed the problem. So, I took everything apart and inspected it all. I checked all of the wiring and there are no crimps, cuts or nicks and I'm comfortable saying that this is not related to the wiring.

I removed the main fuse during the install and replaced it and it is fine. I inspected all of the other fuses and they were all fine. I did mess up the electronic throttle during the install which caused a check engine light and throttle problems. I have since replaced that unit and wiring and now the engine light is off and that is working perfectly.


Everything else works fine and I am stumped. Any ideas. Is there a reset procedure that I need to do since I unplugged everything for the handlebar job?

Check your TSMM (Turn signal Module) by running the diagnostic on it. I plagerized this from HD Forums:

1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.

2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.

3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting sould illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word “diag” should then appear.

4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.

5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted])
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer

6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word “none” will appear if there are no DTC’s. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.

7 - Record the codes.

8 - If DTC’s are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.

9 – Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.

10 – Turn Ignition switch to OFF.

Google the codes you come up with, if you don't already know.

Start off checking the easy stuff first. 1. Check Codes ,2. check conections on the handle bar control wiring connector in fairing . 3. Make sure you did not break the brake switch by the master cylinder. Did you run handle bar control wiring internal or external ?

Definatly check to make sure you didn't break that brake switch. Its easy to do, and will also make your cruise control not work.

I think I broke that switch. Is that the accordian looking rubber grommet with a little hard plastic "dot" on top. Where the hell do I find one of those? That would affect the turn signals also?

The handle bar brake light switch is located on the inside of the bottom half of your throttle controls housing facing the brake lever.(Look closely and slowly squeeze the brake lever and release. You can see the top of the nub of the switch going in and out against the brake lever stop. If you broke it just order one from your local HD dealer (Probably has one in stock) . Next time remember to shim your brake lever out (open) when removing the master cylinder .

I have no doubt that you broke the switch. You're not the first and you won't be the last. I've seen it happen many times.

I think its a very common thing, at least my dealer told me it was and had them in stock. Its like $70 I think..?? could be wrong, but you gotta solder it in. Pain in the ass, but it must be done.

Not sure what year your bike is but if it is throttle by wire it is fairly new.
Just because the tail light and front marker lights come on with ignition on doesn't mean there is power to the turn signals and brake lights. The front turn signal bulbs have two filaments, one for marker and one for turn and the power sources are different.
Sometimes a fuse can be blown and a visual inspection can't determine if the fuse is good or bad. Try using a test light or voltmeter.
Even if you broke the front brake light switch the brake lights should work with the rear brake pedal. The front or rear brake light signal goes to a brake light relay and it uses a different power source.
The turn signals and brake lamp circuits don't have much in common. Check the ground posts under the seat behind the fuel tank; make sure they are tight and corrosion free.
You need to get a wiring diagram and start tracing the circuits down; perhaps the problem is related but if you attack the troubles one by one you will get there.

The codes and the procedure to access them are already posted in this section . I would check for codes first , if your engine light is on when the engine is running then there are codes stored in the ECM .
