Clutch Failure

Greeting all from N. Nevada, I just experienced a clutch failure on Saturday.

I apologize up front in that I am not a wrench but will try to describe the scenario as best I can. I have an 11 FLTRX with 2300 miles on it. While starting to downshift from freeway speed (sixth to fifth) my clutch cable failed and I lost the clutch. Got it stopped and later figured out that the clutch cable had separated from inside the transmission. It looks like the adjustment screw backed off releasing the cable, or something thereabouts. The cable was secured in the clutch and all seems well. My question is, can this be described as an unusual incident; or, is this somewhat common; and, do I need to look forward to something like this again?

On the bright side, I am learning more and more about adjusting the bike, servicing, and some other DIY projects for it.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Is it possible that the clutch adjusting screw became loose at the clutch pack. I believe that would be much more likely than a complete failure. If the dealership did any adjustments prior to you picking up the bike, possible the jam nut was left loose.

Garage
not sure but wouldn't that be a warranty issue?

Roadie09, thanks! Your explanation is how it was described to me by the dealer. With that said, I will need to poke around in there when I service the bike to get a grasp for what it actually means (not a wrench).

Brhodea, yes the dealer fixed it without charge. This is the same dealer I purchased it from so probably their original error.

Now that its fixed, I am assuming I should not have to worry about it again; unless of course they don’t tighten the screw on the clutch pack.

I don't think this is a real common problem unless there is someone who simply does not pay attention to what they are doing that works on the bike.

The adjusting screw is very simple, basically a bolt with a jam nut. If it is tightened to specification, it should not come loose.

MARTIN, if you don't have a HD Service Manual, I would suggest you get one. Good to hear that is was a simple fix.

It is not a common problem, I have almost 40K on my bike and I only adjusted the clutch 1 time and it really didn't need adjustment.
