Tuner Install Issues

I purchased a Terry TV-3 unit for my 2011 RGU. It seemed to be exactly what I was looking for but unfortunately, this might not be the case.

So the install goes fine (I thought). Got a red blinking light then eventually a green light as per the instructions. Riding around for a bit tonight - about 20 miles into it, total loss of power and engine light comes on.

Limp home at 20 mph trying not to get rear-ended on US1, cussing the TV-3 the whole way home.

Get home, restart the bike and engine light is gone and full throttle capabilities are back.

This morning I pulled all my TDC codes and this is what I found waiting for me - oh joy.

P0120-Throttle position sensor 1 range error
P0123-TP sensor high
P0131-Front 02 sensor low (lean)
P0131-Front 02 sensor low (lean)
P0132-Front 02 sensor high (rich)
P0134-Front 02 sensor open/not responding
P0151-Rear 02 sensor low (lean)
P0152-Rear 02 sensor high (rich)
P0220-Throttle position sensor 2 range error
P0222-Throttle position sensor 2 low/open
P0577-Cruise control input high
P1510-Throttle actuator control limited performance
P1511-Throttle actuator limited power management mode
P2101-Throttle actuator control motor circuit range error

Awesome. So I guess I'm ripping the TV-3 out today :-/

I go on LOOONG rides with my club and I can't afford to be in limp mode with the whole crew waiting on me. I should've gone TTS or PCV in the first place I guess... Crap. I hope I can get them to take this unit on return.

One theory I have on this is that the unit plugs into my Throttle Position Sensor and that perhaps with the way I had to route the wires, they are getting heat soaked by the rear cylinder and throwing everything off - but then why the O2 codes?

Any insight here would be helpful. Thank you.

No clue what's involved with the install of the tuner but is it possible that you have the 02 sensors reversed? I posted this on your other thread but black is the rear cylinder sensor and grey is the front.

No - the O2's are hooked up correctly unfortunately.

All the problems seem to come from the o2 sensors. It looks as if the bike is going from a lean to a rich Air Fuel Ratio. The change in AFR is telling the ECM that there is something wrong and the ECM searches for the problem. The P1510 & P1511 codes are the actual codes that causes the limp home mode. The ECM sense that there is a problem and shuts down the Throttle Control Actuator and enables the limp home mode. I would suggest that you unhook the tuner and put it back to stock . Then run the bike for a few minutes then check and clear codes. Ride your bike for awhile to see if any codes come back. If there are no codes you may want to reinstall the tuner and try it again, there may just be that you missed something in the instructions when it comes to the installation. You may want to contact the manufacture for any suggestions. I use the HD Screaming Eagle Race Tuner and haven't had any problems with it.

Did the se race tuner install require a dyno run?

No ! There are downloads according to the mods you do such as A/C or exhaust. But you can get a Dyno run done . There are some pros & cons to the SERT you basically have to take the bike to a HD dealer for the downloads. The SERT is not permanently mounted in the bike it is only used when programing the ECM for performance or when doing a Dyno Tune. The fact that the SERT is not mounted in the bike is nice because it doesn't take up any room under the seat. Also there is NO CUTTING or SPLICING or Alterations to the wiring harness it uses the stock wiring harness that comes with the bike. To me the fact that you can keep the stock wiring intact just like it came from the factory is a huge bonus it just seems to me that there is a less chance for a wiring problem. Any time I take the bike to the dealer for work I just put the SERT in the saddle bags just in case they need it. To insure the best program for the mods I would recommend a Dyno Tune but it is not a requirement. I had a custom Dyno Tune done to my bike but I had the 103" kit put in with cams so I thought it be beneficial to have the Dyno Tune done.

maybe your O2 sensors are crosstalking screwing things up. I know this has been hashed over before on another thread LOL.

No, I've eliminated crosstalk as being anything of significant importance as the bike was running SOLID until the Tuner install.

I'm looking pretty heavy now at a SERT install. Crap, this thing just SUCKS money.

I would spend the money and get the TTS mastertune and learn how to use it. Pc-Pain on this site gives nice deals.

Get ready to study, and dust off your chemistry and physics books if you want to eek out everything this tuner can do for ya. On the other hand, you can let it do most of the work and just ride. Nothing permanently installed. Access to the adjustments yourself instead of having the dealer do it for ya ($$$).

I am happy with mine, but then understand I do still own a pocket protector (under the jacket...) and I think I have a slide rule in a holster somewhere.

...and I used to think my Sportster was heavy...
