Hi I'm going to be doing some engine work on my 09 when the weather starts warming up and would like to get the bike up in that air a little. I am thinking of building a temporary platform to run the bike up on to while doing the work. Afterwards it would be disassembled and stored away or cut up and parted out for use elsewhere. Probably made of wood. Has anyone done something similar? If so can you post pictures? I do have a bike Jack but it is way to weak for large bikes like a RG.
I don't have access to my pics but a while back I built 4 platforms out of 2x10 wood to put my car on to change things like drivetrain/clutch/etc. They have served me well for years and your post gave me the idea to use it for the bike too.
I basically made 2 pieces long enough to fit under the wheels with some overhang and I beamed the middle down the center length then had 3 or 4 crosspieces in there too. Or to put it another way build a 'box' frame with 2 pieces top and bottom, 2 end pieces each side and 2 pieces across the middle and one down the center lengthwise. Of course, you would not need the extra strength to hold a bike (the car is over 3300 lbs!) so less would probably work. The 2 pieces top and bottom gave me 6 inches of lift then I just used the center pieces as the lumber was dimensioned so 9 1/2 inches giving me a total of 15ish inches height. Had to see saw the car up to get it that high using rhino ramps as mid-height temps cause I didn't have a jack to lift the whole distance at once. For that matter just use Rhino or car ramps (but there is still the issue of holding the bike upright!) But after all the hassle of building the box it might just be worth it to get a stand!
You still would have to work out how to get the bike on it, how to keep the bike upright and how to move the box around when not in use. My boxes are pretty heavy and a bike is longer so your box would be bigger! Or use 2 smaller boxes and if you have a bike jack just jack the bike up and set it on two boxes (thats what I will do as I also have a bike stand that locks the front wheel that I could bolt to the front box for stability.
Just a thought...
