This weekend i was able to complete a bunch of project i wanted to get done on my 2012 Road Glide Custom:
1. Add an additional 12v accessory port to my left glove box (thanks you to the members of the forums who have posted similar projects)
2. Add locks on my glove box doors.
3. Add an additional audio input to my stock Harley radio so i could use the XM feature on my Zumo 665 without have wires across my dash.
Project 1
Install additional 12v accessory port in left side glove box.
Parts Needed:
12v adapter from Harley- Ebay $15
16 gauge wire (stranded) red & black (bulk wire 25' each)- HomeDepot $10
dual male spade & female spade connectors - Radio Shack $5
Harley Davdison wire conduet- $3.50 from Dealer
After removing the fairing, I decided to place my new adapter in the left side glove box. I just so happens i have a habit of putting my phone and MP3 player in that box so it works for me. It also happens to be close to a power source so i don't have to add a bunch of wires all over the place.
I used a 7/8" spade bit to drill a hole in the left box. I used a hobby file to clean up any burs. And then just installed the adapter, simply place the adapter in the hole then screw the housing on from behind.
As for the wiring, i measured out how much wire i needed and added female spade connectors to one side, I am a little OCD so after crimping, i also soldered the connection. I then heat shrink'd the connections and added a slightly larger piece to cover the head (just to add that professional look). On the other end of the wires i used dual male spade connectors from radio shack so i didn't have to cut and tap the existing wiring.
Connected the female connector to the new adapter and the dual adapter to the existing 12v adapter, then connected the stock wiring to the second male adapter. tada all done.
The first set of pictures (above) show the inside of the glove box before the mod and after the mod. The second set of pictures (below) show a close up of the new adapter and an inside view...
Project 2.
Install locks on the glove box doors.
-Lock kit was provided by eGlideGoodies.com.
-I just followed the instruction included with the kit and installed with no problems. I would mention however that the instruction ask you to use the reinforcement ribs in the door lids to help measure out the location for the locks, however on the new road glide models the reinforcement ribs are only in the bend of the doors, they don't run the length of the door so a little more time and effort is needed to measure out your drilling locations... Everything you need to do the mode is included (even the drill bit). I opted for the the matching key set for a little extra money...
the mode came out great. no complaints.
I was thinking that in the future i might remove the self tapping screws (used to mount the lock bar) and use a screw and nut combo... but for now the self tapping screws are working just fine.
Project 3:
Adding a rear audio input to the HK Harley Radio.
I honestly just followed the blog found on Iron Aces Speed Shop's website. The instructions were clear and precise with great pictures... I will just try to sum up what i did.
If you want the instructions check out How To: Hardwire AUX input on Harley-Davidson stereo
After removing the radio, i removed the face plate ( IMO the hardest part of the the whole mod. I did the mod exactly like the "instructions" so i drilled a hole in the component plate (used a hobby file to remove any burs) and inserted a grommet (purchased from radio shack) into the hole. I brought a 3 foot audio extension wire, also from radio shack and cut it at 1.5".
After trimming the cable i threaded the cable in the hole to the front audio port. (as per instructions). Soldered the points and buttoned the whole thing up.
I bought the power port from Harley and put it in my right side saddle bag, instructions are super easy and for the power it simply plugs directly into the charging cable already hooked up to the battery from the factory.
