Arrow Rookie Loctite question

I've spent some time reading through my service manual for my '16 FLT. Im getting ready to replace my front brake pads. My question to you guys is... Should I use Loctite on all fasteners, nuts and bolts when reassembling my bike or adding aftermarket parts? Or should I use only when the service manual calls for it?

Aloha, Jason! I use Blue (243) Loctite on all assembly - better to be safe than sorry. The Blue 243 works well on all metal fastners from 1/4" up to 3/4". No primer is required when using the 243.
I seldom use the Red (263) Loctite; it requires a lot of effort to break the sealant loose as heating (500F) is required before the use of tools. The Blue sealant is easy to break with hand tools.
We use Loctite products a lot as they are all MIL SPEC (MIL-S-46163A).

What he said. I use blue Loctite on all critical fasteners, unless red Loctite is called for, example, mounting bolts for docking hardware.

Another YES on loctite blue. I recently installed new bars, Kliphangers. If you not familiar with them, there are a total or 12 bolts that tighten to 150 inch pounds. I checked them a week after installation and they all needed a little tightening. I then went about 1000 miles and checked them again. They were really loose now. The directions didn't call for loctite so i didn't use it. Went back and loctited the shit out of all of them! I'll never make that mistake again. Like the other guy said, only use red when you think it is going to be permanent because it requires heat to loosen red.

Yes Blue Loctite is your friend. Be careful with the Red as it does require heat, and it may not be where you can readily apply heat. Amazing that a liquid can lock stuff up like that but it works!

so to add to the OP's confusion, liquid or stick loc-tite? and is there any difference in adhesive properties
?

Blue if you don't want it to come lose.
Red is you don't want it to come off.

What ever you use, blue or red, be sure to chase and clean the threads before you apply it. It wont adhere to old thread locker.


Now about those caliper mounting bolts. The MoCo does not specify the use of thread locker or new bolts on the calipers. And the new bolts do not come with thread locker installed. So for some reason, the MoCo does need feel the need for it, or there is an issue with using it.


Personally, I do not put thread locker on those bolts. I just torque them to specs as per the manual. Never had one come loose.

As an old Shovelhead rider I learned to put blue locktite on any and all bolts, red if called for.
I replaces the brake pads twice on mine, as I used an aftermarket Kevlar pad which didn't have the initial "bite" I like, so went back to OEM. I did not use locktite when installing the mounting bolts when they were torqued to spec, as the manual didn't call for it, and they were still tight.

I appreciate the input... Blue 243 will be my new best friend! Now, if only Lyndall pads came with pad pins grrrr
