If you look around the service department most dealerships have a large poster that shows whats included in there service. I had my 1k done there but will do my own. Just finished my 5k and the maintenance book tells you what you need to at what miles and how to do it. Best $60 I have spent.

If you look in your owner's manual towards the rear (pg 253 for my 2011), it will tell you what's supposed to be checked or serviced. Whether or not your service department actually does it all is up for debate.

Yeah! The OWNERS MANUAL! You know, the little BOOK you got with your new $20,000.00+ motorcycle!!!!!
It has LOTS of helpful information that you SHOULD KNOW about your investment!!!!
I am NOT sorry, if anyone thinks I am being a bit harsh, with my reply. I read my manual cover-to-cover as soon as I had time [toilet reading is relaxing!]
and I have NO sympathy for those who don't.
I read the manual on every new item I purchase with my hard earned money, as I feel it is the best way to help me save myself un-needed stress and money for un-needed repairs.
I also got the service and electrical manuals to help me help myself.

I say do it yourself and get to know your bike. I do my own service and my wife helps. It is pretty straight forward. The list in the manual is what they are supposed to check, most times you are lucky if they change the oil correctly. I don't have much faith in the service departments.........

I chose to do mine myself. As long as I have receipts for the parts (oil-filter & such) it complies w/ the waranty. Checking fasteners, belt tension & such are things I do anyway on a regular basis. I'm noticing a bit of the dreaded "Wobble" but they have to fix that as a waranty issue (that I'll have them do if & when my Voltage regulator has to be replaced).
If there is something I simply can not do, I'll take it to the stealer..........Other than that, They put their hands deep enough into my pocket at purchase, so I'll do my regular maintinance myself..........

For $400 dollars you get to help other people earn money to pay their bills. Seriously, as stated they list of items that are inspected/serviced can be found in the owners manual and the service manual. If you have basic hand tools and any mechanical ability at all, you can easily maintain your bike. Take the $400 and support other people another way by buying personal touch items for your bike.

And if anybody actually believes that purchasing any machine is an investment, the are in for a real disappointment. Unless it is a collectors item, modern day machinery is worth less every minute you own it.

Roadie09. you are correct that a machine is not an investment, the same as a house.
However "investing" ones' hard earned cash in a device which can "enhance your living experience" is more of what I had in mind. In which case, it is only prudent to do your utmost to ensure the longevity and reliability of said device as much as possible.
Which brings me back to reading the manual to learn as much as you can about the "proper care and feeding " of your expensive toy. :)

Ok let's start it's not my first rodeo here with new bikes cars I do all the performance upgrades on my car and do it myself but I was told to bring it in for them to Dyno it to.was wondering if that part of it? As for the "MANUAL" f*** that cause what that says and what they tell u well that seems two different things allready!!!!!

There is about a $300 charge for the a$$ reaming the dealer gives you! I’ve seen service techs start engines without putting oil back in. Leave stuff loose or just not do what you’ve paid them to do. Get a service manual and do it yourself! You will save money and feel better knowing that you did it!

My 1K service at the dealer was $190, I supplied 4 quarts of Mobil1 and a quart of Spectro 6 Speed gear oil. $400 is a bit on the high side. Some dealers service departments are better than others - find a good one if you can. I did my own 5K (minor) service and I am picking up after having the dealer do the 10K today, before heading out on a nice roadtrip around the Great Lakes.

I conned the stealer into including the 1,000 service when I purchased my bike. It's just my way of making the dealer earn my deal. From here forward I do the work.

Oh and the service manual is a much better item then the owners manual. Invest in a service manual, you can actually make some money??
