How much to pay?

Howdee,

I'm in Ontario, Canada, near Toronto. I would like to buy a RG custom and walked into a local dealer. They refused to budge off their price ($24,850.00 before taxes/fees!). Is that just the way Harley dealers are? How much (Canadian) should I be paying for my new bike (what is a good price?) and where do y'all recommend I buy it?

I had the same experience, brotha. My dealer can't keep any RoadGlides in stock. He says they are too popular. Maybe it's BS, or maybe it's just because I am in a major metro area. I shopped around, but all the dealers in the area were within a couple of hundred bucks. Not enough to make enough difference. So I just picked a favorite ( closer to where I live ).

Hello Welcome from Calgary,

I bought my RG in Feb of 09. It is an 08 model, back then they were not as popular and the dealer had several to choose from.

Paid 21k in Canadian dollars all in.

They are way more popular now and dealers out here have no problem selling them, classics or ultras.

The dealers may get some incentive from Deeley the master distributor in Canada after the 2013's come out but I would not bank on it.

Best time I think to buy is late December (year end for dealer) or early Jan, you might have a chance then on a 2012 if they have what you want in stock.

My 02 CDN for what its worth.

Got a great deal on mine in December, so that would validate this post. But, can you really wait? One other option is to see what perks they might offer. Sales is hardball. You have to show you are serious, but will go elsewhere for a better deal. Harley is like Apple. Not a lot of wiggle room, but there is some...

Shop around

No pun intended but, it pays to shop around.
How so you ask?
Lemme tell you! :)
I too went to my local dealer and "the price was the price".
When I went to my friendly neighborhood credit union, the loan officer told me they had done promotions with their local dealer.
So, after I was finished talking to the credit union woman, I decided to go to their local dealer. Just for the hell of it.
That dealer gave me a price $1000.00 lower than my local dealer PLUS, they were throwing in highway pegs.
I debated going back to my local dealer and finally did.
Needless to say, after some mind games, they relented and matched the other dealers price and the freebie pegs.

You've also got to understand, this is riding season!
The best time to buy is in the middle of the winter.
Maybe during a snowstorm. :)

Good luck!

Buy on ebay in the US!!
I bought a 2012 Road Glide Ultra with 52 miles on it for 21500.
27000 out door in Canada!
Gonna get a receipt for 17000
Save nearly 7000 over buyin brand new from dealer in Canada.
Easy Peasy!

I did sleep in a Holiday Inn!!!!

I stayed at a Holiday Inn in Front Royal Virginia and liked it a lot! :)

Did you buy the bike sight unseen? How did you get it home? Any special paper work you needed to do? Inquiring minds want to know!

Welcome to the club Brother. I ordered in December and paid MSRP but did get $2000 in in-store credit towards whatever I wanted. I put it all on parts with no labor charge.

Motorcycles are just like convertible cars. And there's an old saying in the convertible car business "When the tops comes down, the price goes up!"

Like any seasonal sales market, if you can wait to buy in the off-season you should get a better deal, as the dealers and private sellers know they won't be getting many impulse purchasers.

I bought a slightly-used 2008 RG during a December 10th, 2009 snow storm. Also struck a deal on a 2009 Rav4 on December 28th, 2010. Most car/cycle dealers could install bowling lanes in their showrooms during the Christmas season thru January 1st or a little later. Best time of the year to buy a vehicle...other than a 4-wheel-drive truck with a snowplow.

Im glad im not lookin for a new bike now. I bought mine in late 08 and its a 09. I paid MSRP which was about 18,500 and got 1500 in parts free. Prices have sure gone up since then. Like stated before id shop around a few dealers to see what others will do or wait til late fall or winter and get a better deal.

If you look around and have the advantage of waiting 3-4 months anyway, you'll find the right bike in the right color slightly used for a huge savings. It took me several months to find what I wanted because I was model, year, powerpak, and color specific in my search. By I found exactly what I wanted and it was only 6 months out of the showroom and only had 917 miles on it. I saved roughly $4,300. all in.

PLus, that allowed me more $$$ for mods! ;)

You should DEFINITELY wait until the end of the riding season, possibly the end of the year. I picked mine up on December 23, 2011, the last business day of the year for my local harley dealer and I got the bike for $21,688 out the door, tax, tag, license. The dealership was closed from Dec 24, 2011 until January 2, 2012. The salesman told me that they were willing to deal because they had to pay taxes on ALL merchandise on the floor at the end of the year to include, parts, accessories, motor clothes, and BIKES. The only thing that sucked about the whole experience was the actual dealer themselves, but hey, for that price, i'll just live with the bad experience and not ever go back to them again. Also, you are already talking about waiting until later on, and that definitely cant hurt, ESPECIALLY when them 2013s start rolling in and they are desperate to get rid of the 2012s.

The rule seems to be with most Ontario dealers that there is no room for negotiation on the bike itself...as others have said earlier in this thread...if you don't buy it the next guy will.

Having said that all the dealers I have experience with myself or through guy's I know will always cut you some pretty good deals on accessories especially if you purchase them as part of the bike sale...i.e. exhaust systems, highway pegs, grips, etc. Go hard on them for these deals as they can easily add up to a few thousand dollars.

I paid $23,800 for my 2011 FLTRU last year...plus taxes but probably got a good $1500 in accessories thrown in plus 10% discount on all my future purchases since then....that's run another $3000 to date.

Good hunting!
