Welcome from CT. My opinion would be go with the yellow custom that you like and add the stuff you want. Either way you go you can make everything detachable and to your liking. As far as prices are concerned i cant really help you but if it were me i would find out what MSRP is for both bikes and id shoot for as close to that (if not under) as possible and try to work in some of the extras youll put on the bike. Also now is probably not the best time to buy a bike since its in the middle of the season.

I had the same dilema as u. I bought the RGC and added a detachable king tour pak from forum member $400, and lowers (from forum member $400) and do it all.....solo without the king. I get lots of compliments even when fully dressed it still is BADASS imo.

plus if u get the Ultra and want the king tour pak removable it cost a lot of money. also i hate the wheels and the graphics on the Ultra. i like the 1" lower rear, the rear fascia, and the graphics on the RGC.

Bottom line they are both great bikes. if you do mostly 2 up touring then maybe the Ultra is for you.

I got the RGC and amglad I did. still grinnin' like a 5 year old on Christmas morning.

Welcome from MO. Both bikes are great and suitable for the long haul. IMO, the Ultra is a bit more suited to distance (especially for passenger) and the Custom is a bit more of a cruiser with less touring comfort/luxury. What style of riding will you primariy be doing? Long hauls and touring, or riding round town and back and forth to work?

Jeff, I just live a little ways down the road from ya in the bitteroot, and I work in Missoula sat-wednesday.We ought to say hi sometime.

I don't use the CB or intercom right now,but it's nice to know I can if I ever want to.

a bgi plus for me with the ultra,is my wife wouldn't ride much before on my dyna, but now she wants to go riding every day :) wife ride more = more riding for me.

Something else to remember is that the Ultra comes with the Cruise Control, Security and ABS standard on 2012. With the Custom, it is an option. The Cruise look easy to install. But remember. The hand control is different. Lean angle on Custom is only 29, but Ultra is 31.

I bought my '09 Road Glide right after the '10 RG Custom came out. (I had totaled my Ultra.)
I tested both and found that the Custom's lowered stance makes for a ruff ride long distance.
I have the Tour Pak detachable so I can still have the RG Custom look. But add the Tour Pak for the added storage, when needed.

The Ultra was not available when I bought mine. So I added the Ultra equipment. I'm not married. But when I take girls for a ride, they love the intercom (with or without the Tour Pak). I like the headset when on cross country rides because I can use it to listen to the radio or CB. You will need to upgrade the speakers to clearly hear without a headset at Freeway speeds. The headset makes it better. But with the Tour Pak in place, the extra speakers do make the sound better.

Welcome from Florida. I have a Custom with a detachable tour pack. The RGU wasn't available when I bought mine, if it were the choice might have been a littlew harder, but I would probably have still picked the custom, I like the guages, wheels, and a few other features more, plus I only use my tour pack for trips, and wouldn't have used the CB, in fact, I changed the HK unit out.

I went with a custom with tour pack because I like the customs paint better and the lowered stance. I bought lowers but wont use until cold gets here and spent another 150 for a pair of bluetooth intercom headsets...got a sport pipe from fulsac to remove the cat and lower the heat...wouldn't go ultra if I had another shot at it..its mine and its great!!!

I went Ultra and never regretted it-ride mostly solo-recently completed 10-day, 2100 mi. trip with contour Saddlemen luggage on back seat, laptop PC in TourPak, camera, tools, compressor, bike cover, spare oil, cleaning supplies, etc. on board, no problem. Never ever considered removing TourPak. Routinely haul home a pizza in the "pizza box" TourPak. I don't normally use CB or AM/FM/CD (get tunes form my GPS,) but I like the the "bells and whistles" anyway. I really like cruise control on open road. I did remove lowers for summer heat. IMHO, buy the Ultra.

By the Screaming Eagle or the Custom

I was having the same dilemma and there wasn't a CVO version in denim black so I ended up buying the custom in black. Its also lower the the Ultra.

I have already dropped another 7K in it and by the time I'm done it will probably cost me a little less than the CVO but I got the color I wanted so I'm happy. I still want to change the front wheels and rotors.

I have to say though if you can swing it and find the color you like get the CVO version in the long run you'll end up spending the same amount.

Just my humble opinion.

Best Wishes. Be Safe!

RoadGlideRider made a good point. The Ultra has Cruise Control, Security package and ABS as standard. Not to mention all the other extras, tour pack, lower fairings, CB/intercom, extra speakers, etc. All this comes at a premium of $3,000 more than the Custom according to prices on Harley's web site. Just adding the Security, ABS and Cruise to the Custom is $1500 in options.

I was in your same position. I was set on a Scarlet Red Custom until they took the color away. After that I still liked the Custom but not with the same intensity with the current color options. By chance, I had stopped by the Harley dealership in Columbus/Edinburgh, Indiana while doing some training there before being shipped off. They had an Ultra and something just clicked. The Ember Red Sunglo looked great and the extra's over the Custom were just icing on the cake. What really sold me was the fact I could take all the extra's off and give it the Custom look, but keep the tour stuff around for a later date when I'd need it. Halfway through my deployment, that's what I ordered. I think it will fit me well because I plan on riding it long distance and use it for 2 up riding.

In the end, it is your bike and your decision. Demo both of them if you have the opportunity. Regardless of what you decide, and I'm sure you'll know by the time you finish a demo ride, your gonna have an ear to ear grin.

My opinion - if you have an opportunity to get the RGC in yellow, get it! :) It's a great color, and it looks like you really like it. For most touring needs (at least for one person) the Custom will satisfy. If you end up doing more touring (or tour two up) you can always outfit the custom further with the tour pak.
