I took my tour-pak apart for paint. Does anyone know what the "special" rivets are that HD uses and where you get the rivet and tool to install them? They want $65 to put them in, I think I can do it just as cheap if not cheaper myself.
Does the job really require "special rivets"? Why not just go to the hardware store and find something that will work just as well for a buck or two? I positively guarantee you that nobody except you will notice the difference.
I do not care if I use rivets or not, I have a buddy that used allen head pan head bolts and it looks fine the problem is you can only get two bolts in each hinge because of clearance issues, I have thought about going with premium hinges, may have to price them while I am at the stealer picking up a few things today.
Scayne, now's the time to go with the Premium hinges. You'll regret it if you don't. They're far superior in both function and looks. I don't remember exactly how much they were, but I'm sure it was less than $50.
The only thing that needs riveted, with premium hinges are the pieces that go onto the lid on the side that opens. I had to change mine out (black) and it took a while to find someone with the right tool.
I installed my premium (chrome) hinges Saturday, there were no rivets required. All screws (with red Loctite.)
The hinge has two "pegs" the go into the lower two holes on the TP lid, then there is a stepped plate that screws into the large part of the hinge and locks those pegs into place.
It ends up being four screws in the TP lower, two screws in the TP lid, two screws in the inside of the hinge (none visible from the outside, of course.)
I bought the premium hinges, WOW what a difference, now I am having trouble with the upper part of the latch working properly, I am going to try a regular rivot tonight and see if that helps. I was just told by a bunch of people that the regular rivot will not work but if Chainsaw used them than they obviously work, I have everythign else back together, after a bunch of cussing the MOCO for their subpar fitting parts, and am ready to put he bottom of the quickreleas brakcet on tonight to finish up. I am also cutting my filler panels and putting in a set of grommets off a 06 SG so I can keep the filler panels and still run the quick release through them. hope I don't jack them up.
I used regular rivets on the latches, not the hinges so I can't promise you they will work. I've never changed out hinges before so I can't say for sure.
i put on premium latches & hinges in black. i had trouble with the friggin rivit tool so I bought #4 stove bolts & nuts for the latches. worked fine. covered them with black with permanent marker. nobody but me knows the difference.
I've installed 2 sets of premium hinges, no rivets. I does help to ream the holes in the TP, especially for the pegs.
