Stopped by the Dealer today, and they were charging the battery on this classic 1985 FXRT. I know, it's not a RG, but heck, it's an FXRT Limited edition.

I rode an 86 FXRP when it came out , was police bike , handled great

RD was Grand Touring

air rear suspension
rubber mounted bars
high spec stereo
full luggage ( hard saddle bags and tour pak was about half size of teh FL tour pak )
2 into 1 exhaust

You're close, the 1986 FXRD Grand Touring Edition was a limited production model, not necessarily intended, they just didn't sell, they were $10,200 and the EGC was $10,500. Harley people just didn't get the concept of a sport touring bike.
That said, first, the faring had a "back", the 'RT's faring was hollow, like your FXRP. The 'RD had glove boxes, and the same sound system as the EGC. An instrument pod was mounted on the handlebar clamp housing a clock, oil pressure gauge and something else that I can't remember.
It also had running boards for the rider and passenger, the 'RT had pegs.
The RD had a Tour Pack and special graphics and paint schemes, blue/silver, maroon/silver and midnight blue.
The exhaust was two into two but, like the EGC, one the left and right sides.
Harley only made about 900 of then and some were still on the showroom floor in 1988.

I really liked them , tried to get wifey on one , but she didnt wanna , and I wasnt coming off the TG for one ..

Someone around here had one for sale about a year ago , would like to have gotten it ..

Funny , back then it looked great , now it looks kinda goofy to me , but I still like it ..

I think it was a great concept , a touring Super Glide .. But I've always loved Super Glides anyways

It was a great handling and riding bike, taller suspension like the 'SP but very few takers. It seems that anytime HD deviates from the "normal Harley" it won't sell.
Look at the V Rod and even our beloved Sharks, the Road Glides haven't had much of a following until fairly recently.

Thanks DC

Thanks for the clarification. I had this bike in mind when I did my FXDL with bags, windshield, a small amplified speaker system that bolted in place of the handle bar clamp. I put over 108K miles and 48 states on that thing before converting to a bagger. I decided rather than run my Low Rider into the ground, a RG would be a worthy replacement.

I had people around me question the concept, but my Sport Tour Bike was awesome. He now works as my Sport bike. No Bags, No shield, and No tunes.
