I'm nearing the 20K servicing on my '07 RG. Called the Harley "Stealership" to get a service quote and was told I'd be lookin just under/over $400 bucks? ...Did I hear this $400 quote correctly or not??? Is this an average amt one is lookin to pay outa pocket (parts/labor) at the 20K mark? For all you mechanically inclined members out there, I know you're all thinkin I should try and tackle this service on my own. Frankly, with my hectic work schedule along with the fact I don't own a garage, I don't have the means or correct tools to even fathom the the thought.

Thanks in advance for yer input!!!

i would not mind paying it if I knew they would perform ALL the services they are to do. I am a below average wrench but I still prefer to do it myself. Like BDmastiff says...."why pay someone to f---up my bike when I can do it myself"...or something to that effect.

Cheaper than here too, but still ridiculous considering what gets done at 20K. If you can't DIY it, shop around for an indy shop.

I just did the 20K on my Ultra and my cost for supplies was under $40. I do understand not having a garage but when I started I just ran the oil out onto the gravel drive. No manual and simple tools. No service manual either.

Today I have a garage but the service mechanical requirement really consists of the lefty loosy righty tighty level. Belt tension. Just twist it and see if you can twist it to 45 degrees. Can't then it is too tight. Go way past then it is too loose.

I check the critical fasteners with a torque wrench set at the low end of the required torque range. If the fastener does not move by the time the torque wrench clicks then it is okay. I check everything on the list for whatever service that is being done. I'm slow and it should be done in about threes hours by the mechanic but I piddle around for about 5 hours.

The way I look at it I am paying myself and I never in my life got over $400 dollars for even 5 hours work. If I can do it then anyone can. Just ask my wife as she says I am dumb.:D

My car dealer has a $29.95 oil change special and it includes a 17 item safety check list. So in my opinion the dealers $400 fees are not justified or acceptable.

So I make no excusses, I just "getter done!"

no way

Well I can't turn wrenches and usually when I do I wind up paying more to fix my screw up than the original cost. Add to that I ride hard so I prefer my bike to be well prepared and am not embarrased that I can't do it myself. Everyone has different skills etc.

I have always had the dealer service my RGU but at the 20k service i decided it was time to start doing it myself. Did have a buddy come over and watch over me and give me pointer to make sure i didn't screw anything up. adjusted the clutch and drained all three holes. it did take a little longer to do than my car, but in the end i'm really glad i did it. Changed from Harley syn oil to Red Line, dealer charges $325, with the tools and supplies i had to get it cost me about $150. Not too bad IMO.
