Reading through the posts i see most people on here have newer bikes. So my question is who all is running the older Glides? I have a 98 and rather like the old girl. Sure it would be nice to have the latest and greatest on the road but it seems like i always stick with something older which leaves me with more funds to change it to the way i like it.
i got a new glide - but its not my first harley and its definitely not my first bike. spent 15 years building and improving a 90 softail custom. turned it into a wicked bar hopper - but as i grew wiser/older i realized there was more to harley than the watering holes and bike shows.
now i disappear for a days to relax - but when i need to feed the andreneline monster i keep a buell lightening in the garage.
many thanks to the guys that kept this model alive for the next generation to catch on.
There's a few members with older EVO RGs and even a few with Tour Glides floating around this site. There's even a guy doing a serious custom effort on an older TG. Search for evo, tourglide, or tour glide here and you'll find some threads.
But its really just a numbers & popularity game. HD has sold many RGs especially since the 2010 Custom and 2011 RGUs hit the market, and those buyers are looking for a website to interact with other RGers.
It seems the RG in its iterations is becoming the new StreetGlide...so much for the RG being a secret anymore.
I just seem to feel a bit out of the group when most of the threads are all the newer twinkies instead of the good ole EVO. The owner of the Indy shop I go to really loves it and says how it stands out. I will have to get some decent pictures of it now and after i paint it this winter.
There's lotsa room for your EVO on this site. I sold a 1996 Road King in June 2011 after upgrading to a used 2008 RG in Dec 2010. I liked my EVO alot but I just wanted a different ride and found what I thought was a good deal.
For a lot of us, it was simply a time for change, I normally swap at around 75K to 100K - nothing wrong with the older models, (at least that's what I tell my Wife!) But after awhile I just want to build something different......
my wife had an fxrt in '91, think it was an '86. love my '04 that we've had since april, but if we could find a clean one like she had before we'd add it to the collection!
I ride a 12 Custom, but my stepbrother has a 98 95th anniversary fltr. Not a fan of the fringe normally, but something about his bike always draws my eye.
Would a 2000 SERG be considered an old one? or just evo powered ones?
I put 130,000 miles on the one I bought new. I like it so much that when I saw another 2000 SERG on E-bay a few months ago with only 14,000 miles on it, I bought it too.
It will get a beauty treatment this winter. the paint sucks and the bad daddy bags and fender are just flat black right now. Wife and i just put 800 miles on her this weekend on a trip for our 17yr anniversary.
Bought my 1st TG in 1981 a beautiful slate gray & black (shovelhead) not a good bike. Then a 85 TG new a great bike & sold it in 88 (big mistake). Then bought my current TG also a 85 in 1990 been riding it ever since!. Its going in this week for new tires & rear belt. Getting to be a little bit of a hassle finding someone to work on it locally, local HD shops want 1 1/2 times to 2 times the std. labor rate! what BS considering the EVOS are easier to work on!. This makes there labor rate $170.00 an hour!!. I think I found an independent finally who works for a whole lot cheaper. Same guy who replaced my base gaskets over 10 years ago, (hasn't leaked since) he's back in the area. With the HD shops with there "10 year" rule makes it difficult to keep the old rigs running. (You would think I was drivin a "Pan Head" or something. ( I have always done my own fluid changes etc) just not the major stuff). Almost got a 95 batwing anniversary (a loaded beautiful bike) on Ebay last week, but at the last moment the seller sold it & I missed out. I was sweating it cause I new that I was going to have to let my TG go, I really didn't want to let an old friend go after all these trouble free & safe miles! Then I found this site last week! how cool to read how all of you guys love your Roadglides & Tourglides!! & there finally getting popular after all these years. I cleaned mine all up looks so good, I don't plan on ever selling her, long live the EVO Tourglides! I guess this qualifies for an oldie! Sorry for the long post. Just getting enthused again, what an awesome bike!! Ride Safe
Well, guilty as charged when it comes to buying new ('11 RGU). But, I plan on keeping this shark and hope I appreciate it as much as you do yours after 14 years. Just paid my sweetheart off a month ago. Your scoot looks just great; biggest difference is that you have had more great riding time on it than I have on mine. Plus, you "got it" before a lot of us did. But for "older" RG folks buying the bikes, us newer shark lovers might have missed out, right?
I have an 03 RG and I love it. I finally have it set up just the way I like (for now) and dont really see the point in starting the process over on a newer bike.
Old 89 Tour Glide here, been doing some upgrades. Have a late model swingarm retrofitted with a 1" axle and late wheel and brake. The best parts swap to date. She aint done yet.......got lots of plans, never gunna get rid of this bike.
