I've got an MU-85B tire on the rear of my '08. It starts out @ 11/32 tread depth when new, and I have a solid 6/32 at three different spots on the tire. Replacement time is 2 or 3/32, which leaves 8 or 9 to use up. So, I'm "figgerin" I've got about 1/3 of usable tread left. Correct? Tires have about 9k on them, leaving on a 2.5 k trip and debating replacing rear before I leave.

I'm thinking about it. I'm going solo, up on the slab, and back on the 2 lane. I never try to run close on tires when 2-up, and I'm thinking the 6/32 should be enough without pushing my luck.

Depends on how long the tire has actually been in service, check for weather cracks between the tread and on the sides. If there is any sufficient cracking and your thinking, "boy I don't know if I'd want to get caught in a torrential downpour with this thing", just replace it. Peace of mind is worth it and you'll never regret changing it out. Just my .02

I agree but according to my calculator you should have about 5400 miles left to the tread bar.

I calculate about 1,800 miles per mm.

However the last 25-30% does seem to vanish much faster than the previous tread. I have left on trips and think I have plenty of tread and come home with the steel belts showing through.

Agreed, hence the question about the actual condition of the rubber. I've seen plenty of tires with lots of tread, but more cracks between that good tread than I'd be comfortable with. I'm a lot more cautious now that I've had a "marginal" tire go down on the road.

I learned the hard way that if you are getting ready for a long trip and wondering if your tire has enough guts left to make it, just replace the tire before you leave. When you are on the road needing a new tire it always costs a lot more, you don't have many choices, and it can be anywhere from inconvenient to a real pain in the butt. Tires seem to pick the worst place possible to fail, like the 7 mile bridge in the FL Keys for instance....

rain

I have 34k on my 11. I am on my 3rd back, and second front. Jim had 23K when he replaced his stock tires and they still looked good to me.

I look at mine. If I don't feel comfortable riding them in the rain, I change em, otherwise I would be worried the entire time I was out and about.

When in doubt, change em out.
