Thoughts and questions on a 06 RG

Since all years have little gremlins. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

I am looking at a 2006 FLTRI. It has 7000 miles on and looks very nice. Anything I should look for in general? Price seems to be right, although not done negotiating.

Also are there any real difference between the “U” and the “I”, besides the trunk and front lowers? This bike has a trunk, so not sure.

Thanks for your help

There was no ultra package available in 06, so the previous owner added the tour pac (trunk). That in itself is a $650 extra bonus for you, and if you want the lowers they are available from HD and a couple other aftermarket companies. With that mileage there shouldn't be much to worry about.

7000 miles is like new. The "I" refers to fuel injection. Fuel injection was not standard until 07. They did not have an Ultra version of the Road Glide in 06 so the tour pak was just something added. There is nothing wrong with the 06 model year that I'm aware of. Good luck with your negotiations.

The primary chain tensor I believe is the non- self-adjusting too so it does require a bit more maintenance just to verify the adjustment. Making the adjustment is a piece of cake.

I had an 05 which road and drove great. I do find I am not as tired on an all day ride on my 07 with the103CI & 6 speed over the 05's 88CI & 5 speed but I think it has to do with the windshield difference more than the transmission difference. Obviously the engine does have to work harder but still quite capable of anything you want to throw at it. Very smooth power band.

I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger.

Oh I would consider changing the tires not because of mileage but because of age. It is 6 years old and probable the oem tires. I would also go through all the lube points of the bike to make sure they have not dried out with that low of mileage.

the 2006 was the last of the 5 speeds. the 2007 first of the six. If the purpose of your FLTR is touring, then consider getting the price down low enough to cover the cost of an upgrade to a 6 speed. Check here for summary

http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/harley-davidson_fltri_road_glide_2006.php"

I don"t "need" the wide rear tire of the 2009 & later, nor do I "need" the so called "improved" frame of the 2009 & later. I get my wide rear tire thrills with my 2000 Deuce and it's 180 rear. I do experience the five speed of my Deuce and the six speed of the glide. For touring I want the 6, for in town, the 5 is fine.

So for me, I would need to know the purpose, and if touring, the cost of upgrading to a 6.

The TC 88" is a good engine and many of riders do just fine touring with the 5speed tranny. At 7000 miles the bike should be like new so I wouldn't shy away from it at all if the price is right. By the way the tour pac is around a $1400 option if you got all the parts new from HD.

About all that can be said has been said, might ck where the bike was purchased etc. @ 7K the bike really is still new IF there is nothing amiss within the motor. or tranny Good Luck.

My wife and I both ride 06 touring models. Hers an flht, mine an fltri. I have no qualms with the 88, but I wouldn't hook a 6 speed up to it. Id be afraid of laboring it if it were stock. However, I would suggest buying what you can afford. If you are comfortable with the price of the 06, go for it. But at the same time if you can afford a newer model you may consider that option. There are notable improvements. JMHO.

I just went threw the process of buying my first Harley 2 weeks ago today !!!! My budget was 11k ish ....... I researched and looked for almost 2 months, and i bought the bet bike i could afford at the time ...... I bought a 06 FLTRI with 19,800 on the clock for 11K !!! So far i love it !!!!

The only thing i wish i have is the 6 speed, other then that she's awesome !!!!

As always, thanks for all the input. I understand the comments about 5 speed vs. 6 speed, although I am riding a 4 speed (79 FLH) currently so anything modern will be welcome. Current owner said a few riding blemishes, so once I see the additional pictures I will make the road trip to fully look over and test ride.

Thanks for your help. I may finally be a member of the shark tank. Although I won’t leave my bat winged friends behind, I just can’t get rid of the FLH, she will always be with me.

I bought mine off the showroom floor in March of 06 and haven't seen fit to replace it yet. The hassles I can think of:

1. Radio display went out within a year, replaced under warranty. (Apparently there has been no change on this one in 6 years)
2. The MOCO did a service bulletin soon after the bike was released to replace the injectors (from 8 degrees to 25 degrees IIRC) and that was done at no charge.
3. Some people had a noise issue on the front brake rotors that they solved by moving the right rotor to the left and vice versa. I didn't have the problem personally.
4. You need to replace the POS OEM barrel connectors that use a ball and socket arrangement on your shift linkage. (I'm referring to the rod that runs above and parallel to your inner primary connecting your shift levers to your transmission.) At around 15K miles that ball will wear the socket enough so that it falls out and you find yourself not being able to shift. It doesn't fail gradually, you will be going through the gears and suddenly your shifter is hanging below your boot. Go ahead a replace them ASAP with heim joint/rod ends that have an eye you put a bolt through.
5. The cam chain tensioners. You can convert to hydraulic and leave everything the same, or you can convert to gears and stick in a new cam while your at it. Dont tell anybody about the new cam and make the folks with 96s wonder what's wrong with their doggy assed motor. (And it's not like they'll be pulling over and waiting for you to catch up, regardless of whether you change cams). But whichever you decide, do one or the other. Don't leave the stock ones in there because the downside isn't worth it.

That's what i can think of off the top of my head. 7K is like brand new, and you can expect a lot of years out of it if that's what you're looking for. As far as the 5 speed, you can loaf down the highway at 75 turning a hair over 3 grand and get 40 mpg doing it. Not bad. Good luck.

PS: the only other thing, and it's just a PITA deal--the stripes don't line up. Why the hell they put a stripe down the fairing, tank and saddle bag on the 06 with no regard for lining them up is beyond me.

Just got my 06 FLTRI last Saturday. Only 5800 miles. This is my first Harley and really pleased so far. Ordered 15 in Wind Vest today to help with the buffeting. Sure hope it works. My last bike was a VStar 950 with 5 speed so 5 is ok with me. Really appreciate all the help this forum has been. I

6 speed is like overdrive and is worthless under 70 mph. Gear driven cam and better oil pump are the only things necessary to upgrade. The 88" will walk all over a six speed 96" once the cam is upgraded. Enjoy!

Can anyone tell me if the 06 had an option were the radio was w/ or w/o the CB? I don’t need it, but when looking at the bike it only had one antenna and the guy said in 06 it was an option, not all bikes came with CB’s.

Just curious, not a breaking point at all but if he is not telling the truth, maybe something else is wrong.

#23 ·
It was an option in 06. There is a section in my owners manual that covers CB operations. My bike has only on antenna also !!

No real problems with the 06's. TC 88 and 5 speed are just fine. If you get a good deal don't worry about all this bigger engine, 6 speed, improved frame, and other BS.

Get the best deal you can afford.

And to add, yes, the CB would have been an option, not standard. I also believe that in 06 the cruise control was an option.

I can’t believe it’s been a month, well between my business travels and the guy with the bike paying off loan and getting title. I am making the 6 hour round trip tomorrow to hopefully bring home the 06. So I will be a real member of the shark tank. Hope my batwing doesn’t get jealous. Although she is old and wise!

Thanks for all the info. I hope to post pics tomorrow night. Forums like this are priceless.

You did great Cakeman. The "Blues" are relatively rare, sharp color. :)
