What do you know..they made a good decision for motorcyclists here in California!!! MORE PLEASE...

Friday, July 13, California State Governor Jerry Brown signed AB 1047 into law, becoming the fourth state in the country to prohibit roadside checkpoints that only target motorcycles. California joins with New Hampshire, North Carolina and Virginia who have already enacted similar legislation. AB 1047 passed by a unanimous 77-0 vote. The new law will become effective on January 1st, 2013.

A letter of support circulated to California State legislators by the Coalition of Independent Riders (C.O.I.R.), through the US Defenders program, stated that the motorcycle-only checkpoints were discriminatory and un-American.

The letter went on to say "across California, law enforcement agencies have been using these funds, not to establish generic checkpoints intended to stop all vehicles looking for impaired operators, or unsafe vehicles. Rather, these checkpoints have been stationed adjacent to motorcycle events and stop only motorcycle riders while automobile drivers are waved on."

"Persistence pays off!" said Jim Lombardo, a lobbyist for ABATE (A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments)of California. "It took two years of hard work to get our bill through both Transportation Committees, the Assembly and Senate Appropriations Committees, passed by both Houses and then returned to the Assembly for concurrence to a stronger amended bill!"

Meanwhile in the U.S. Congress, dozens of Congressional Representatives have signed on to House Resolution 904 to prohibit the U.S. Department of Transportation from providing funds to State and local government agencies to check helmet usage or create checkpoints for a motorcycle.

Excellent!!

Glad to hear that news.
Great post!

I was just on a huge ride to (July) Friday the 13th in Dover Canada.
Really bothered me to see a couple random locations that cops were yanking anyone to the side of the road for random hassles.
Felt wrong that they can and do that!!
We are having a lot of trouble with police in Canada.
Great progressive move in a democratic society!! Way to go California!!
