I know this is an issue with alot threads but I have a 2010 RG custom and after changing front tire I got the wobble between 40 and 50 mostly deceleration. I gonna get it in to have the steering head nut retorqued but I also notice my front end is tweaked a little. Never been down. Was wondering, to loosen everything to straighten it out does the fairing have to be removed? If so, do I really want to pay a dealer thier labor cost to do all of that ?
Have had your front wheel checked to if its not the issues?? To answer your question about working on the triple trees you can do it without removing the outer fairing. You will need to remove the gas tank along with the nacele cover with the speedo and tach to work on adjusting the triples trees. To tighten up the main steering nut the front tire should be taken off to remove the extra weight of the wheel and tire
As far as paying a shop that depends on your abilities and desire to fix it yourself
The front tire does not need to be removed to tighten the main steering nut.
According to the maint manual, under steering head adjustment, the only things you remove or loosen on a RG is; remove the speedo/tach housing cover (to gain access to the nut) and loosing the bottom pinch bolts before torquing the main nut.
It actually calls for the wheels to be equal distance off the ground.
Forks are not bent. By tweaked I mean, wheel is straight bars already turned slightly. Not even enough to be unridable but when your anal and notice something, it bugs the shit out of me. Thanks
Mine too, bugs the shit out of me as well. Personally I think my faring is off a little but I try not to let it bother me.... I know exactly how you feel though.. I think its an OCD thing.. LOL!
Could be the handle bar riser bushings? Have someone hold the front wheel and move the bars back and forth while watching where the bars attach to the upper tree. Several companies carry replacement polyurethane sets for about 35.00.
Id live to figure out what is the other half of removing the gas tank...meaning there's the 4 bolts and the gas line. What else do you have to do to remove the tank and how.
My handle bars were also like that. Wheel was straight and bars were turned slightly left. I fixed it by sitting on the bike and turning the bars full lock to the right and then applied more pressure as if trying to turn right till they were straight. Has to be in the bushings.
I have a '10 custom as well. I had the deceleration bar shake as well, the dealer fixed it under warranty by properly adjusting the steering nut. It was too loose, its been 20k miles with no more issues.
I also have the problem feeing like my bars are crooked. I feel like I have to reach farther with my left hand than my right, and it makes the left side of my back hurt on long rides. I tried turning the bars to the left and turning them real hard against the stop, but it didn't do anything. I may try bushings.... I can also see that they are a little off based on the gauge pod and the inner fairing where the radio is. They don't match up straight with each other....
I just noticed today that my front tire is cupping on the left side. I wonder if the crooked bars and that are related....
