New Cases

I toke my 10 RGC to the shop a couple af weeks ago because I heard a loud knock. It turned out that a bearing had moved in the case and now they are getting a new case from Harley to install. As it turn out the flywheel is also warped so bad the have to get one of those also. It is the bearing on the right side just behind the cams and things. The new case now has a set screw in them to prevent it from happening. The mechanic told me that the cases were made like that from 08-10 model year. So watch out. It's hard waiting for the bike to get back home.

Pretty standard deal, the MoCo won't admit that their crankshafts are screwed up. #1 their flywheel/crankshaft build procedure doesn't get them real close in the first place, #2 some of them will twist out of line with the slightest provocation. If the crank scissors bad enough the end shaft wobbles enough that it will make the bearing walk out of the cases.
I'm surprised they'd not just replace the whole motor once they got that far.

If it was mine I'd send the crank off to have it aligned and welded before it's put in, but since it's warranty work you're stock with the same potential problems again.

I agree with tdkkart, since the are going to be replacing your crank, spend the extra and have it true and welded, you won't have to worry about this problem anymore.

I heard it most at idle, it was a loud knock you can't miss it. Funny thing happen when I toke it in they replace the conpensator with the screaming eagle, and called said come pick it up. when I rode it out the shop I did a U-turn right back in the shop and ask them, "hey you can't here this". They all came around listening to it and said you can't ride this thing home, long story short I did indeed ride it hame and had it towed in the next morning.

Mine is in the shop for a similar problem, I heard mine the week before SWII, and took it for service, they found metal on the drain plug and have torn it down, found scaring on cam, cam lobe, oil pump plate...

Noises they dont hear

I've been looking for info on this problem. Last week Big Rosey, FLTRU, went in for 45,000 service. I have been complaining about what I called excessive clatter not unlike loose valves or collapsing lifters. It was so loud when it would happen that one day at 80 with my RF1100 on and headset playing loud I suddenly heard it and looked for Oil Pressure problems. It comes and goes. The noise settled down to only happening at 1800-2100 RPM with light throttle load. Also puking oil heavily out the breathers to the point my Right bag looks like hell in 300 miles. They pulled the heads for some reason. Found the rear cyl had signs of excessive heat. Duh, Death Valley is a favorite riding area and cut through to California. when he pulled the cylinders the rods stayed in place. He said he could move them but it was difficult. Oil Pump and the cam plate all junk. They said the cases may be usable and perhaps the heads. Mind you I rode it in and just was in a 700 mile run the day before! MoCo is pulling a 2013 engine off the assembly line and sending it to Stealer since its under warranty, 14 months old. Perhaps this is not the correct ride for lots of miles.

I have a 2010 also, this thread seems scary, but I have a 107 with the crank trued and welded plus the timken conversion, and if all else fails I have a 2012 103 engine sitting in the garage...... wondering if I should do any work to it..hmmm.

I think your golden. DedHD is another story. After late 80's Evos , I always worried about doing top end work ONLY. Like rolling the dice.

Had same kind of problem, stealer didn't think anything was wrong, took it to an indy, took motor apart, crank out 14 thousanths, MoCo says that is in spec, indy said it was egg rolling, cam plate scared fuel pump scared bearing sleeve was blue from excessive heat on it, Now, new motor built from crank up,built by indy, cams, oil pump, fuel pump, had heads diamond cut while they were off, (they claim 12% cooler due to cuts), motor is strong and runs hard, and cooler.
