Got a flyer in the mail today from a local dealer that is offering 2 and 3 year unlimited mile lease programs on new and used HD's.

Never heard of motorcycle leasing... anyone else?

The terms looked identical to a car lease... at the end of the lease you can turn in, purchase or renew...

might be an option for people who like a new ride every few years.

Sadly, as of this past Friday, 7.27.12, the MOCO won't allow leasing new bikes. Fortunately, my wife was able to get her Street Glide, by her boss convincing a visiting bigwig to let one more lease go through (she had been thinking about it for a couple weeks). You can still get a lease on a used bike, though.

FWIW, the finance guy thinks that MOCO told Chrome Capitol they couldn't do leases on new bikes any longer, because they want to get leasing going through their own EagleMark credit department.

A simple use for a rented, not leased, bike is to buy one in the fall. I got a 2010 Electra Glide Ultra at well over $5000 off the list price of a new one, in the fall of 2010 after it had spent much of the summer out on rentals. Most of the warranty remained and all of the original minor issues had been resolved by complaints from the renters while it was being rented. I used it for a year before upgrading to my 2011 FLTRU, which also had a few miles on it. Now I have a 2011 shark at far less total cost than you might expect but my "new" shark had only 3200 miles and I still had new bike issues to resolve with it. Monday it goes in for the 10,000 miles service and another new bike issue. The front brake disc has a runout problem on at least one side.
