I just droped off my bike at the dealer to replace the voltage reg and what did is see on the show room floor? Two fairly new Gold Wings! I was kinda shocked since Gold Wingers never trade in their bikes. Yep the the customer service woman said they came in yesterday and left with two new HD's. Not sure if any of them were RG's. No matter good to see another rider appreciate a HD!
I wonder how long it will take a Harley dealer to sell 2 GWs? Not like the GW crowd is hanging out at the HD dealer. I wonder what they bought? Hummmmmmmmmmmmm....
Harley dealers here don't have any other bikes on their lot except Harleys. They take the trades and have them vanish from sight immediately. They will take anything in trade, but you would never know it unless you were there when they took in the trade.
The Honda dealer next door to my local Harley dealer has a pretty good selection of used H-D's along the back wall of their large showroom. Not everybody buys into the "Harley or Nothing" stuff - there's lots of good bikes out there and Honda's are disgustingly reliable. The H-D dealer doesn't keep any non H-D's for resale - and the "Other brands" section of used bikes that used to be on their website is gone.
Dealers will get a buy bid from metric shops. They'll take the trade then sale the bike to the metric dealer for the agreed bid. And vice versa. It is damn near impossible to sale a metric from a H-D dealer and most metric shops will have equal issues trying to move a Harley. That's why you rarely see metrics at your dealer. I guarantee the wings will be gone within 30 days. They're prolly gonna try sell for a better profit, but after so long they'll get their bid and deliver them to the Honda dealer.
I stopped by my local Honda dealer and tried to trade for a new goldwing but they would not even entertain a decent trade on my decked out RGU. They told me they had a 2004 GW with 140,000 miles they would trade me straight up for but thier new market goldwings were selling too well and no market for used harleys. Oh well, going to try the Victory dealer next to see what they have to say.
That's BS. The wings go for wwwaaayyyy under MSRP. Your typical GW buyer is a hard negotiator, demanding hi-end for their trade and low-end for the new bike. There is a lot of margin too, so your dealer is filling you full of it.
As far as the no market for your Harley, that might be true in a way. It's possible they have a no Harley policy. Meaning they can not take your Harley in as trade. That's not usually the case with metric dealers, but they are out there.
Just curious...why do you want to trade your Ultra for a GW?
I sold my 07 GW with 4700 miles on it when I bought the 2012 Road Glide. The Gold Wing is a better, faster, more powerful, better handling, more reliable bike, and hands down, the better bike........ON PAPER!
The one big downfall of the Gold Wing.......It has no soul!
The Gold Wing is a fantastic bike if all you want in a motorcycle is smooth, quiet, reliable transportation. If you want something that stirs the soul and makes you feel alive, the Road Glide wins hands down! I wouldn't trade my RGC for a brand new Wing if you threw in $10K.
I don't try and kid myself that the HD is a better bike in any particular catagory, just that it makes me by far happier than the Wing did!
Besides, I could never get used to the bar-stool seating position on the Wing, and the fact that I was riding a Gold Wing!
At Ted's Motorcycle World in Alton Illinois. Not only will you see new gold wings. But all other Honda models as well. They are a Harley,Honda, and CanAm dealership.
I've got nothing against riders of other makes, and most of them are fine machines.
but they just aren't as much fun.Period.there is nothing like being on a Harley.
you aren't getting any younger,my new Road glide was a lot of money, and I already had a Harley, but I figured if I didn't get the ultra now, then when? I'm over 50 and not getting any younger.you don't want to wake up one day and go "gee,I should have...."
Last year traded my 10 GW for 11 RGU. Dealer had GW out front with their HD inventory of used bikes. Two weeks later I'm at the dealer an a old guy is standing in the lot next to my old wing which he had just purchased to convert into a trike. I see wings and other bikes all the time in their used inventory. Probably a geographic thing on HD dealers reselling wings. Also probably depends on the year and condition of the used bike. I tried to sell the wing for two months and could not get a taker. Local HD dealer sold bike in two weeks for more than I was asking, go figure !!!
Agree on the wing reviews. Great machines but they have no personality or feel to them. They have a huge following just as HD does and that's a good thing. What the heck else would we have to pick apart if there were no wings in the world ?
Like the others, I say go for it - you will never know what you are missing until you ride a glide. Now, would it increase your street cred and make you cooler? I can't say, but I will tell you that you will feel cool for sure!!!
About the hot chicks, no guarantees there either. But worth a shot!
HD of Indy used to be a Honda dealer also, a year ago the got rid of the Honda franchise. Now they have a relationship with a metric shop and deals the trades to them.
Yeah, what everyone else is saying. Nothing like being on a harley and I have been on metric bikes and it's just not the same. While I had a blast and love riding, having my harley evokes so much more precedence than a few of my other buddies that have metrics. I still respect what everyone rides and ride with anyone who is willing to ride with me.
