Yep, it's not even worth worrying about removing it after the second time. Piece of cake. I ditto changing the gauge colors with LED's. I switched mine to red and they look great, I hope to send out the speedo and tach this coming winter.
I too have no problem with pulling the nose off of my bike. I have no problem getting it on. What I have a huge problem with and can't seem to get it right is the final reinstall just before I start putting in screws and that is aligning the fairing properly with those 3 little wings on the inside of the fairing. Any help from the pros would actually help big time.
Remove the headlight assembly, it snaps back in from the front, and it makes it sooo much easier to get it back on the hangers. Plus, you know you got it on the hangers right (see below).
Try to get it hung just right, then I wrap a flat blade screwdriver in a microfiber towel (thinner than a regular towel, better than a shop rag) and pry the (@#$%&%^^&%) tabs in place. If everything is lined up right when you hang it, they usually just pop right in. If not, say a few choice words you would rather your kids not hear, and try again. You will know they are aligned if the three screw holes are lined up. The screws should go straight in if all is aligned properly. Don't forget, the long screw goes in the bottom hole.
One other thing, I rarely remove the windshield when I take the front off. That way you can see how well the f***ing Wellnuts are seated. If you have a tricky windshield install, one less hassle. I never have had any issues doing it that way.
You bet'cha Ed. Electrical contact corrosion is the enemy and using some dielectric grease is a must-do that us old tin can sailors know about.
Of course I happen to think PVC will eventually rust here in Cocoa Beach. I know my zillion dolar MOCO "stainless steel" floating rotors sure did. Electrical connections are still good though.
1. upgrade cig lighter on left side to "marine grade"
2. add marine grade cig lighter to right side.
3. dielectric grease on all connections
4. upgrade speakers, add amp from vendor of your choice add sound deadening to inside of outer fairing
5. hidden antenna, especially useful is you want to have detachable tour pak, 1 less wire to unplug
6. change instrument lighting to color of choice
7. change out air temp guage to something useful, pounds of boost perhaps or oil temp
8. clean it, you will be surprised at the dust and crud that does get in there
9. retrieve old well nuts that have "pushed through" the outer fairing
10. add some rubber or file down the top of the radio mounts where they contact the outer fairing, on older models this is a rub point that can wear through the outer fairing eventually
11. add more accessory power wiring for future items such as gps power, ipod/iphone charging, you can never have enough power
12. change headlights to something brighter than stock
(triskaidecaphobia)
14. tidy up all wiring and make sure that everything, and I mean everything is out of the way of the headlight assembly when you pop them back in.
Do it all at once and you're looking at a week of eveings if you have the stuff together.
After the outer is back on;
15. buy a 4.5mm deep socket and re-aim those headlights higher than what the manual reccomends, seen is safe my friend no matter how many people you piss off!
When you get all that done, pm me I'll add more to the list for the next time you take it off
Get rid of the el cheapo trim around the fairing with X Trim.
(Somebody else already suggested the internal antenna which is what I was originally thinking.)
Take some pictures as you do things and post them up.
I'm sure I'm not the only interested reader.
