Looking for best suggestions to protect the lids on my saddlebags. I remember seeing some self adhesive 3M type products a few years back, and was thinking this might be a reasonable solution? Any ideas or experiences out there.....?
i use hog covers they work great
if my husband gets a different bike he would have them too but his is flat black so it wouldn't look right on his
you can go to my profile and see pictures of mine or go to the hog covers thread on here i think they have pictures too
For clear paint protection check out www.hogskinspaintprotection.com the complete RG kit is on sale for $206.86 which has clear protection for the front fairing, cow bells, fuel tank, fairing lowers and saddlebag lids. Some HD dealers offer this product along with installation for a additional cost.
The hog covers are a nice item but the Hog Skins have the ability to protect more of your bikes paint. I just put on a brand new painted outer fairing and it wasn't even on the bike for 30 days and some cager passed me and threw a rock right into the outer fairing resulting in a nice rock chip, so after I get the outer fairing repaired I am installing the Hog Skins on my bike.
My only concern with that product would be yellowing and/or staining and the effects it would have on the paint after you remove it. Adhesive being left behind, etc. Im familiar with the automotive PPF and that stuff was a nightmare to work with and deal with back about 10 yrs ago. Maybe/hopefully technology has changed but back then, this stuff was a paint & body guys worst nightmare.
I have the clear platic film on my 2011 RGU. The bike is almost two years old and there's no cracking, peeling or discoloration. It looks just like it did when I bought the bike. I'm especially happy with it for covering the saddlebag lids and the front of the fairing. My GF has scraped her boots across the top of the bag lids a time or two without leaving scars in the paint (yeah!). I've also taken a few rocks on the fairing that did nothing more than dig into the film. Since my film was dealer installed and came with a lifetime warranty, a quick trip back to the dealer and the fairing film was replaced free of charge.
Hog Skins is a great paint protection for your saddlebags, upper and lower fairing and more..I have ridding buddies that have up to 30,000 miles with Hog Skins and they love it !! They even guarantee it against yellowing ...Goes on easy and looks much better than some of those other products..check it out.
Being a hogs cover owner, let me first state that they do the job that they are intended to do and they do it well. However, they are not invisible (anything that you probably put on your lids will be somewhat apparent) Most people who did not know what they were thought that they came on the bike for shipping protection. (they kind of have that appearance). Since they are super easy to take on/off I put them on when the girlfriend is riding with me and on long road trips. Other than that I leave them off and accept that if something happens, lids are a cheap repaint
They will fog up and yes you will see them, Mine are bright and clear, no yellowing. I am thinking about painting the underside in the middle gloss black for some contrast. I have black lower fairings on my road glide. so I am gonna get some black material and simulate the painting and see what it looks like. They do scratch if your drag your foot across them and if your dogs walks across the top of them when they are off after getting washed, BAD DOG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But I am gonna buff that out on the cover. Metalsport makes some cool top plates for hard bags but I cannot drill holes into them plus my wife bought me the covers.
You can also paint the underside of the Hogcovers the same color as your bike so that when they are installed they simply look like the stock bag lids. Just like when you paint an RC car body from the underside.
Have to agree hogcovers are the way to go IMO. I have a 12 year old that is my main passenger and they have saved my lids. Lost one and they replaced for shipping cost. They will sow scratches but better them then the lids. Plus they are cheap compared to other mods.
