Doesn't make any sense to me. If he's doing it for aesthetics, then at least use a fork leg and wheel for a single caliper bike. As it is, it doesn't look very nice with unused bolt holes and mounting bosses.
Crazy... Wonder how he plugged the one line. He seems like the daredevil type...maybe he cut it and rolled it up and Jb welded on top. (Just be careful) ??
I can attest to there being no way in hell it has more stopping power! Hahaha. I just went to single disk and there is certainly a loss in performance.
nah , has to better better stopping performance , he peeled off a couple pounds excess weight removing the other side .. dont have as much weight to stop now ..
Ok, Boys and Girls, there are some people you should 1. not take advice from; 2. not let work on your motorcycle; and 3. never ride in front of. There are all kinds out there, choose wisely.
The one thing it will do is give less travel on the brake lever because it's only moving 1/2 as much fluid.
It will feel "tighter", which probably makes him think it is working better.
Put down the tools and back away from the motorcycle............
Aren't there people out there that remove a caliper and rotor so you can see more of the wheel? You know the big 22" and way bigger diameter wheels? I don't understand why everyone is so worried about it. I personally don't think it's a good idea but then again I don't have to ride his bike either. I wouldn't do a lot of stuff I see on people's bikes that look rediculous. I always say.. to each their own
The statement in the first post stating that it stops better than with two is where the logic goes out the window.
I read an article about helmets in a biker mag, where someone wrote in and made some commen about a helmet ain't gonna help you if you hit the road at 70 mph. It was obvious that this person never took a Physics class to learn about forces and friction.
As everyone else has said....WHY....in my opinion it looks dumb, it looks like something is missing...I can't see how braking would be improved, a lot of load on one caliper and rotor...there is a reason why the factory put two on...highly doubt Harley was like, it looks cool with two rotors on it, if one was enough they would have made it that way.
To be totally honest, on my 2004 Ultra, a few years back, I put the 6 piston Hawg Halter caliper and the 11" rotor on the front left side in place of the stock double set up. It stooped just as good if not better. To do this, I had to also change out the master cylinder to put the right amount of pressure to the 6 piston caliper. If all he did was eliminate one of the calipers and rotors, he is asking for trouble. Like many of you have said, it's not just unsafe, but completely insane.
People do all kinds of crazy stuff to their bike, in the name of vanity. Personally, if it doesn't make it go faster, handle better, or more comfortable, I don't need it.
The craziest thing I think I ever saw on an Electra Glide was the guy that made his own pipes. He used 2" or so electrical conduit, and bent his own two into two pipes, from the heads back to just in front of the saddle bags. No heat shields, no mufflers.
It looked rough, had an exhaust leak around both heads, and sounded horrible. Just obnoxiously loud. He swore up and down that it gave him 20 more horsepower though...
I would get it if he had a custom wheel and fork as was mentioned earlier and the caliper and disc was done correctly. I have absolutely no idea on the performance but it just seems like it would be less no matter what unless there was some serious upgrading of components. What he has in the pic doesn't even look good so it just seems stupid to me.
I don't even think he achieved it looking any better. I think it looks worst, let alone the compromise in braking. I think he's just trying to convince himself by saying it has "more" stopping power. Best of luck to the poor fella
I think he's a fool, but I did some pretty dumb things back in the day when I was young & stupid...
I found a nice cherry '52 Panhead dresser back in the early '70's, and of course chopped it (I even threw away most of the original parts!!!). Swapped the front end to a girder and spoolie wheel (no-front brake at all). Only braking was from that old mechanical rear brake that was just about worthless. To add insult to injury, I threw a suicide clutch & jockey-shift on it ....It was the thing to do back then you know... looked cool as hell, but it damn-near killed me a couple of times...
I got real good at squeezing between cars while panic stopping, and riding through cornfields (more than once) ..... I also dropped it a few times because I was hammering the rear brake with my right foot while holding the clutch in with my left foot, and coming to a stop off-balance ...fell over like Artie Johnson in "Laugh-In". Being drunk at the time didn't help either.
I learned a lot about physics on that bike, and sometimes wonder how I survived...
Thats strictly for looks, removing the caliper shows off the wheel. You see alot of guys with show bikes (you know, the ones they dont ride) that will do this. As far as him saying he has MORE stopping power...He's FULL of SHIT!
Naw........not gonna say it. changed my mind! But this has been one of the most amusing threads I’ve seen in a looonnggg time!!!!:laugh::grin::wink:
