Option to buy 2015 RGS but issues with bike need help on decison

Hey folks,

Got the option right now to buy a 2015 RGS with 11k miles on it matte black. Took it to Patriot Harley in Fairfax. This is a private sale off someone I know. (he paid the 190 sales inspection.

So this is a good bike, has a stage 1 kit on it, SE Filter, Tuned and flashed, blacked out pipes full system Reinhart and 10-inch bars, Sounds pretty good...

So I am thinking of purchasing. He is selling for 17k. Not bad considering these would be sold around 22-23 at a dealer.

So I want to know if I should buy this bike as is, and do the repairs on it myself at an indy shop or take it to the dealer, order parts online aftermarket or have the dealer deal with it. They said the repairs would be around 1800-1900 on it.

So the dealer said that its leaking clutch fluid and cylinder needs to be changed. How much would this be? Any good aftermarket ones?

The second issue is the shift sham cap by the shifter (not sure if I am pronouncing this right) The mechanic said this is a common issue on these bikes. Anyone else heard of this? Any aftermarket parts to change out so it'd don't break again? Is this really a big issue?

The third issue, front brake pads need to be replaced and brake pad needs to be rotated? Not sure what that means? Id probably just buy EBC brake pads, there like 20 bucks online. Easy peasy to do it yourself right?? not sure about rotating the brake calipers, Cant remember if that's even the term they used?

The fourth issue is the front tire is shit. Needs to be replaced and the thingy changed off the rime, cap I think. Not sure again. Looks like those fuckers tyring to say all this shit is wrong with the bike, fuckin Harley trying to make as much money as possible.

Fith issue is it needs an oil change. Of course, there going to say that haha.

Other than that they said it sounds good and don't think anything wrong with the engine. The bike is solid and seems like only wear and tear shit. Very hard to find a clean 15 RGs for 17k with a stage 1 kit add-ons right?

If I have to eat 1800 bucks that's fine still be 18800 out the door even with these repairs.

There all more expensive and most dont have add-ons that are as low in price. Again this is a 15 RGS with Stage 1 kit for 17k. Not gonna find anytng like that at no dealer and dont want to buy private more than 50 miles away as could have issues just like this one. At least its in the area and easier to deal with.

Seems kinda high with those repairs. That bike sold new for 23K. I'd expect a lot more than 4 K off a 3 1/2 yr old bike. Have you searched for leftover 17 s ?

The main thing is if you feel the deal is decent and are comfortable with it. As far as what they found that needed attention, i would bring it up to the seller and see if he can help you out with the added costs. You could save some by wrenching yourself or an Indy if you know of a good one in your area. Doesn't sound like they found alot wrong so it should be a solid bike. Give it a shot maybe the seller will let the dealer fix the items and pick up the tab since it's a pretty easy sale for him not having a bunch of tire kickers coming to his house. I think if your paying 1800 out of pocket you may be able to do better by shopping around for a different bike. How about the 15 on this website from a fellow forum member for around 15,500 i think.

So the seller owes around 17900 for the bike still. I'm pretty much taking over his payment.

Gonna sound a little brutal on this but I have a '15 CVO RGU. I'd be lucky to get 26k out of it right now with the new M8 on the market. Don't kid yourself if you think that bike would sell at a dealer for 22-23k when a new RGS is a few grand more with all the latest and greatest on it. I'd say 18k is more realistic at what a dealer could actually get out of it. Any time you're under what a dealer would sell it for, you're normally ahead of the game a bit.

so kbb lists it as $15,850 for dealer trade in, and $19,580 for dealer retail. course with the dealer retail, they would have already taken care of those deficiencies for you, as well.

i think it's kinda high myself.

I understand the concept of reality, but find it too confining for a way of life.

...... seller might have to eat more of that if there's that much repair/maintenance work to do.
.... Has the 10k service been done ?
........ has the rear tire been replaced ? rear brakes ?
... If not, why is the front already toast ? they usually last twice as long.
..... i'd deal a little harder

I'd tell him to do all the work and then that's a decent deal. If not I'd pass. There are better deals out there. A stage 1 upgrade is a dime a dozen. If you keep shopping you may find a bike that has a lot of aftermarket upgrades for that price. In Jan 2013 I found a 2011 Street Glide with 14k miles with ABS, security and $4500 in extras for $17,800. Book value on that bike was over 19k. Twin Cam prices are dropping. Look at these 17K bikes with only 3k and 4k miles on them.

Good luck with your search!
