1st real ride observations:

I just got back from my 1st real ride, not nearly long enough. BUT, I have a few observations, comments and questions:

Ride: extremely comfortable bike to ride. On long open road trips, I don’t think you can beat this bike. I am 5’ 9” - 145 pounds. This bike is very heavy and is going to take a little getting used to BUT, even after a short while on it, it got much easier to “move” around! LOVE THE RIDE!

Heat: (I have Reinhardt slip-ons, ventilator intake and H-D tuner/download) the heat on the right side was literally unbearable, and it was only about 70 degrees today. I stopped and opened the lower vents and it helped a little but, in hotter weather, it is going to be a problem. I have read that it’s the cat in the pipe. What are my options to get this to run cooler. Break in, bigger sensors, and then the auto tune? Or, dyno? I definitely need a solution for this.

Lights: I have CD in all four turn signals, H-D Saddlebag lid spoilers with lights and the H-D upgraded R/T/B Tri-bar light replacement. The turn signals all blink at the correct standard cadence but the directional signals on the dash blink at twice the speed, almost like the older models did before you added the modules (forget what they were called) so that the lights would blink normally. Also, is the H-D tri-bar LED? I can’t find anything that says it is. I know the custom dynamics ones are.

Windshield: The stock shield beat me up on my first short ride, when I got the bike. I bought a Klock Werks 9” Dark smoked flair. It is still not enough. I can’t hear the music at all and the wind in my ears is very fatiguing. Anyone have a pic they can send me of thief bike with the 12” KW’s on?

Audio: All boom 2 with 900 watts of power. Honestly.......it is terrible. I am hoping that it wasn’t flashed properly or something isn’t right because it sucks! My 2011 CVO Street Glide with standard fairing speakers, lowers and lid speakers blew this system away. My old bike didn’t have boom 2 and not even half the power (I think it had just the power from the head unit for the fairing and lowers) and it was 100 times better. These speakers sound like cardboard, at normal listening volume it is completely distorted and clipping and I am positive that the speakers are going to blow. Harley should be ashamed of themselves. I read that boom 2 sucked but couldn’t imagine that it would be this bad. I wanted to try and stick with H-D stuff but this was a waste on money. I spent a fortune for the audio and it sucks! What can I do about this?

Nice bike yer gonna love it 👍as for the heat issue you need a cat less head pipe eaither aftermarket or try and find a stock one on craigslist and decat it.Easily done on the m8,yer going to want to keep yers intact just in case of any warranty issues. Just my opinion for that. The rest of it i don't have a opinion on,you'll figure it out have fun.

Turn your 4 ways on for a bit and it will fix your fast blink dash.

Welcome aboard. Great looking bike, love the paint. Everyone here knows that orange is the sexiest color! I ride with the stock "toe nail clipping" windshield but I also ride with a FF helmet most of the time so the wind over the windshield doesn't both me at all. You'll probably want to try something around 12" to get yourself in a pocket of still air.

The audio is, and has been, a source of constant aggravation for all but the deaf. I have no clue why HD seems to be determined to stick with the same old supplier year after year, despite it being one of the most complained about items/options on their bikes. No doubt about it, their audio just sucks. My old man ears keep me from being as demanding as I used to be about my audio sources/speakers, but I haven't gone totally deaf yet. If you're contemplating making it significantly better, you'll probably want to start with new fairing speakers. Take a hard look at the Focal brand of speakers (made in France by a company that has a large offering of $6k to $20k+ home audiophile speakers) if you can find a dealer demo near you. They aren't what I run now, but they will be what I run when I trade the bike or upgrade the audio. Just one guy's opinion.

Heat: Yes, the cat is going to burn you up. Getting rid of it or going to a different header along with a proper tune/dyno will help a bunch, but there is a lot of heat produced with these bikes. I've heard replacing the saddle heat deflectors with the Captain Itch Crotch Cooler makes things a little better, but I don't dig the "look". I installed the HD CoolFlow fan behind my rear cylinder https://www.harley-davidson.com/stor...05-26800128--1 last fall. I haven't really had a good chance to see how effective it is yet, but it is only meant to help around town in stop and go traffic.

Windshield: Get a shield from Freedom Shields and you won't be disappointed. John is a great guy and will work with you to make sure you get a good looking shield that works best for your setup. You can even try it and exchange it (as long as you don't remove the protective film). Windvest is another good option. You get what you pay for.

Audio: Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but BOOM! stuff is junk. It is meant to sound good when the bike is in the showroom and not running down the highway. It is way overpriced and there are tons of better options out there for less money. Look at Biketronics, ArcAudio or some of the higher-end Rockford Fosgate stuff to start. There are tons of other options too, but more experienced audio guys will chime in, I am sure. I have a 4 speaker setup (fairing/lowers) that uses the Biketronics BT4180, ArcAudio 602's and Polk MM652's and it works for me. I'm sure a different combo of speakers could help it sing better, but I am happy enough!

Man, I don't even care about your ride and what an ugly bike you have! just kidding, beautiful bike. As for the heat, get rid of the cat or get it so they are in the muffler, ditch the Harley boom crap, the low screens are good for Summer bar hopping but if you are doing some serious miles I personally would go around 11 or 12". Any issues with the signals and they won't straighten out, i would give CD a call. They are quite helpful.

There is a seller on the auction site that sells decatted oem stock headers for a reasonable price. That way you still have your stock header if ever needed for a state that has emission control requirements.

I understand that the boom 2 sounds not as good as specialized aftermarket stuff but it's not as bad as you describe. It was either flashed wrong or installed carelessly. You probably have partially blown speakers which happens when installed incorrectly.

I take the lowers off in the summer. Not because of bike heat, but because of no airflow across my lower body to cool me off.

I wear boots and Kevlar jeans so I don't feel heat from the bike itself. I am hotter from the sun than from the bike.

Buying the '16 ultra was a mistake for me living in the south. I am much cooler without the lowers than I was with the twin cooled.

I love the stock windshield. I wear a modular helmet so I like the smooth air instead of the buffeting I get with the winter shield on.

I agree, HarleyÂ’s audio systems arenÂ’t the best, but I have heard a couple of boom systems on demonstrations, they were actually not too bad, but still overpriced IMO.
