The dreaded oil transfer!

Took my new 2019 Road Glide Special to the dealer today for its first 1000 mile service. When paying my bill the service writer said I would have to come back after another 1000 miles so they could check the transmission fluid level as I had oil transfer. I asked if the transmission was empty and he said it was just low when the tech did the service, I told him I was aware of the problem after reading about it on this forum. He told me about the new vent kit for the primary that I was already aware of from reading here. I will be checking the level every 100 miles to see if it is transferring. Does anyone know if this new fix works? Not sure I want them drilling a hole in my primary if the fix might not work. How about the aftermarket pushrod? Anyone know if that has been used on the 2019. Thought Harley had tried that? Would rather do the pushrod than have them venting the primary. Has anyone had a low level at the 1000 mile then have the problem go away (wishful thinking)?

Hope I didn't make a mistake trading my 2007 in on a new one!

There have been quite a few people say they had a transfer issue early on and then it seemed to just go away. The primary seems to create enough of a vacuum that wants to pull the tranny fluid through so the new primary vent from HD should be a fix but it is so new I don't know if it has been run out in the real world long enough to validate it. I really don't see why it would unless a vacuum created by the primary is not the problem. The chopper place that makes the new clutch rod does make it for the 19's and it has been working fine so that would be an option as well. This is not a problem that is going to do damage to your bike so I wouldn't stress over it but I would want it fixed. Let us know how it goes.

Same bike same issue.......I am happy to have the dealership warranty-fit the vent kit if I keep having the issue...it won't hurt the bike and frankly a primary vent like that is what Shovelheads had as stock for 18 years! And if it doesn't fix it for free, then I will shell out for the Macomb County Choppers fat pushrod. Don't sweat it. Plenty report the pushrod has worked for them. There are a few positive reports about H-D's vent kit, but it's very new and it's not even publicly available....so expect more feedback on that over the rest of the year.

You didn't make a mistake. The bike is incredible (except of course for the transfer issue). Like RGKen said, it stops for some people. I haven't transferred a drop in about 2,500 miles. If it starts again, I'm hoping the new vent is the "fix" we've been looking for.

No mistake, just keep an eye on it. That’s what I do. Still the best bike I ever had.

So here is my transfer story, i have an 18 RGS transfers about 12 oz in 4000 mi. We are moving from California to Washington, so i am hesitant to get a "fix" until I'm settled. In talking to dealers on the way up here i get four answers at four stores. The first dealer i spoke with a couple months ago says vent the primary (prior to the kit) experimental in house fix.. The second dealer says vent is not a guaranteed fix and clutch rod voids warranty, so just wait. Third dealer says nothing reliable but should have something from the MOCO in a month or so. The Fourth dealer says the vent kit does not exist (even though i gave him the part number) and the only approved fix is a seal kit #36300028. Stopping g every thou miles is a pain in the ass and No answer from the MOCO.

Just went out to check the transmission fluid level after just a 60 mile ride home from the dealer after 1000 mile service, NO FLUID shows on the dip stick! Will have to call the dealer in the morning, not happy.

My 2019 RGS started transferring at 4400 miles, I followed the HD process and had the 'slinger' fitted, 600 miles later I was back as nothing showing on the transmission dipstick.

When I was in the dealer discussing my transfer issue there was a HD tech there and he told me HD had tried the fat clutch rod, machining the casing and also fitting a seal, all well reported 'fixes' here and admitted that although they all slowed the transfer none actually stopped the transfer completely (under their monitored testing)

He said the reason is, the primary is creating a vacuum and 'sucks' the oil across rather than it being pushed from the transmission and said the best solution is the new vent kit which stops a vacuum being created.

I said OK fit and lets see, luckily he was carrying one with him and left it with the dealer to fit.

I do have a fat clutch rod waiting to fit but prepared to give HD one last chance.

I have spoke to the shop manager at my dealer and he said if the vent don't work they will fit the fat clutch rod and be done with it!

Time will tell.......watch this space!

Called the dealer Monday morning and let them know that after 60 miles no fluid was showing on the dip stick, this morning they came and picked the bike up as they did not want me riding it back without oil. The service writer said they were sure they would resolve the problem but I told him I had my doubts after reading online that they have been chasing this for a few years. I asked if they had the new vent kit in stock and he said no, said Harley is only releasing them on a as needed basis and that if they think I need the kit it will be attached to my vin number. That is telling me that we are the test fleet for there new try for a cure.

My fingers are crossed.
