16 Road Glide Ultra Water Pump

I just rolled over 10,000 miles this weekend on my RGU during the Hot Springs Rally. Saturday morning my CEL and Temp lights came on after about 15 miles. Limped back home and ran through tests and no water pump.

Iíd heard there were problem with the ďwetheadsĒ and now I know first-hand. The Motor Company is well aware of the problems. The original pump has been discontinued and H-D has basically retro-fitted the new M8 water pump for the 14-16 wetheads.

Called my local dealer. Iíd heard H-D was helping out, not recalling, those with issues. Not here! I was quoted $350+ for the pump and and at least another $350 for install. So at least $700, prob $800, before itís done.

No thanks! I can install it. But Iím still pissed. Shouldnít be having to replace a water pump at 10,000 miles on anything. Much less a Harley. Now Iím beginning to understand some of the complaints Iíve been hearing about the new bikes. Waiting on parts to arrive.....

I bought one from Surdyke for around 265 and installed it myself on my 16 two weekends ago. Comes as a kit with a German made pump. You will need a vacuum system to refill the coolant and a pair of crimp style hose clamp pliers

Just got the water pump kit and need to pick up some tools. Will this work for the HD clamps?

I have a 2015 FLTRUSE and have had two separate instances where the idiot lights related to cooling system failure came on, both on long trips far away from a dealership. In both cases, the codes thrown were P0132, P0152, and P1019...the latter indicating the pump failure according to the service manager over the phone. I resolved it the first time by replacing the 10 amp fuse for cooling. The second time (a month ago), the idiot lights went mysteriously off after about 90 miles and a few starts/stops. I just had the dealer replace the water pump and was able to get it covered by the extended warranty (that was expiring two days later).

Some folks seek the comfort of the straight and narrow. Me? I prefer the twisted road.

Many of us have had this very issue...I even fixed my old pump (there is a sticky thread in the forum about it) and it's still working to this day but I did buy the upgrade kit for a winter project.

How come I didn't see this thread in August. Had to replace the pump and thermostat under 9K miles. A year to the month later, this past August, it happened again! $$$$! I love my FLTRU but this is ridiculous. I am not convinced the dealership used the new pump. The service manager hardly gave me the time of day and mumbled about the pumps being superseded a number of times. I'm planning on a cross country ride next spring and not sure I can trust it.

Does the new kit significantly change the hose routing? Debating on whether I should install the new kit or see how long this one lasts? I came so close to going back to an air cooled RG. Man, I'm semi-retired and don't want to spend a ton more for another bike.
