a question before tearing things apart

Went out to wash the bike this morning and found the stereo on. The stereo, which has always been ignition powered, now turns on and off with out the bike being on, and does NOT turn on or off with the ignition as it's supposed to.

Any hints, clues, or ideas before I start pulling everything apart?

Would be helpful if you post the year and model of bike. On a Rushmore bike, is it the 6.5 or smaller radio as an example. Info goes a long ways as we have some very knowledgeable members here.

Checking his earlier posts. It's a 2009.

it used to be in the sig...don't know what happened to that, it's a 2009 with an aftermarket head unit plugged into the factory wiring harness.

Almost sounds like the HU is going tits up. Some how drawing power for the constant 12v feed. Did you hook it up originally ?

yes, I put it in about 2 years ago, and it was wired into the factory harness. It never had a constant feed, just the ignition. What's happening is the unit isn't turning on with the ignition but has a constant feed now.

You are going to have to open things up. Disconnect radio and test power supply wire if it is on all the time. Anytime after market gets mixed in you need to remove that before any other trouble shooting
If that wire is hot all the time it may well be ignition switch. problem with that is if it was others lights would be on.
Maybe another hot wire shorting the the power feed for radio.

The hot wire is in the oem plug. That's how it keeps time and holds preset settings.

yeah, that's kind of my point...the entire harness up to that is oem. the head unit plugs into the oem connector.
Everything was fine the last time I rode (about 2 weeks ago) now this.

just looked at it again. if I turn the radio on, then turn the bike on...when I turn the bike off the sound goes off with the ignition but the display stays lit up. Turn the stereo completely off, it still doesn't power up with the ignition.

See if there is a relay in the system. As long as you haven't messed with anything I would think it's a relay that is not shutting off. Just my $.02.
