As for the Guided Rides on Tuesday and Wednesday, both days we will be doing both rides Andyman has listed in the SWV in TX Venue Details & Information thread and listed again below.
Update to the Guided Rides. The Lonestar Motorcycle Museum in Leakey, TX has agreed to open their doors for us both days (Tuesday and Wednesday) from 9am-1pm. They are normally closed Monday-Thursday but graciously willing to open for our group for these 2 days.
4 Groups will be going on the 3 Sisters Ride both days and 4 Groups will be going on the Llano Ride both days. As some have mentioned the desire to ride certain routes in both directions, 2 Groups will go Clockwise and 2 Groups will go CCW on both rides. This, along with starting groups 45 minutes apart, will make that possible and will aid in spacing out the groups to minimize wait times for meals, refueling (which is VERY limited on the 3 Sisters Ride) and bathroom breaks.
Below are the detailed ride directions with maps to be given out at the Venue upon arrival:
Ride Route # 1
The first of the 2 main guided rides is listed below. I'll call it "The Twister". It includes the ride that y'all have probably all heard of, the one at the top of some lists as the best motorcycle road in the USA. It's actually 5 roads linked together, but combined it's called "The Three Sisters" or "The Twisted Sisters" or just "The Threes" or any/ all variations of this. The Sisters are Ranch Roads (RR's) 335, 336 and 337 and are linked by state highways 41 and 55 on two short stretches.
In addition to the Sisters, this ride will go along the Guadalupe River and some of the prettiest Texas Hill Country you'll ever want to see. For those who've never been to Texas, you might not believe it could be so beautiful.
From the hotel we'll skirt downtown Kerrville on Spur 98 and hit hwy 27 west of town. At Ingram we'll fork off to hwy 39 through Hunt and along the river. We'll continue south on 39 to 187 and zip down to Vanderpool. It is there we will turn west onto 337, the first of The Sisters.
337 will take us over mountains and to a town called Leakey (pronounced "LAKEY"). Please please please, be wary of the hairpins and the 10 MPH speed limits in some of them. There are a lot of skid marks that go straight off the road in these turns, 10 MPH means 10 MPH.
There will be a lunch stop in Leakey at The Bent Rim Bar and Grill. They are expecting us there.
After lunch we continue back on 337 and over some more technical rides to state hwy 55 at Camp Wood. There is a gas station there and you'll have approx 90 miles to go before another chance for fuel.
55 will take us to my personal favorite of The Sisters, RR 335. It runs along the Nueces River below and has miles and miles of roller coaster. There is also a ranch before the roller coasters with some interesting exotic wildlife. Camels, a rhino and a giraffe are the big stars. What some people do with their money...
335 will dead end at highway 41 and at the junction is a large area to park, regroup and let slower riders catch up. Everyone will be nothing but teeth and cheekbones, it's such a fun, fun fun ride- and scenic, too.
41 is a wide open, well paved run that some folks will do triple digits on. After approx 10 miles it will bring us to the last of The Sisters, RR 336. 336 is a canyon rim ride through active ranch land. You will cross cattle guards. Lots of them. May even see a heifer or 2. haha.
336 will end up at US hwy 83 which will take up back into Leakey where we'll double back a way from where we'd ridden in earlier in the day. Once past Vanderpool though, 337 will be new to you and a whole new set of mountains, twisties and long long straaightaways through more ranch land and along the Frio River. 337 will dead end in Medina, Tx at Texas highway 16. From there it's a 22 mile run back up to Kerrville and the hotel.
I know this will meet your expectations and leave you with a great memory. Just writing this has me all excited to do it again. It'll be a blast!
Ride Route # 2
The second group ride will be as follows. As with the first ride, directions and mapping for self guided runs of the same routes will be made available to all at check in.
This run is an outstanding wildflower run. Unfortunately, it's going to be past wildflower season during Shark Week, but in early March through mid April the area is covered in Bluebonnets, white thistles, Indian Paintbrush and prickly pear cactus flower. Despite the lack of breathtaking flora, the roads themselves are a real treat- some of the best in the hill country. These routes have been planned for months. But they will take you through the city of Blanco and across and along the Blanco River. It's the one that flooded and did most of the damage you've heard about this past week.
Here's the route:
Kerrville to Comfort, Tx on Tx HWY 27 to Ranch Road (RR) 473. 18 miles.
Comfort to Blanco Tx, RR 473 to US 281. 42 miles
Blanco to Hye, Tx US 281 to US 290W to RR 1320. 24 miles
Hye to Sandy, Tx @ RR 1323 12 Miles (This is LBJ country. The former President lived in these hills)
Sandy to Willow City, Tx left on 1323 for 17 miles (Stop and wet your whistle at Harry's on the Loop). Go west another 2.5 miles to Tx HWY 16.
Tx Hwy 16 north to Llano and Cooper's BBQ- 20 Miles (cross Llano River bridge, left at signal on hwy 29, Coopers on left- you can't miss it. Cooper' is about as good as it gets. Come hungry!)
From Coopers, back track where you came in to town approx 5 miles to RR 2323. Turn right onto 2323.
2323 will bring you into Fredericksburg at US hwy 87. Turn left and go in to town. Good shopping there. Also the Museum of the War in the Pacific is there. Chester Nimitz' hometown.
Luckenbach is less than 10 miles from F-Burg. (We will gather there on Thursday, by the way!)
To get back to Kerrville, in downtown F-Burg, turn right on Tx Hwy 16 and shoot south approx 20 miles and you're home.
You'll love this!
