My name is Tim, originally from Oregon/Washington area and live in Alaska now. This is my first Harley. I rode dirt bikes and enduro’s as a teenager and fell in love with the FatBoy after seeing a co-workers teal and white one almost 30 years ago. I have been wanting ever since and finally talked my wife into letting me buy one. Took the MSF and course and got my endorsement, which was a requirement before I could get a bike. I was looking at the Street Rod a couple years ago when I was up here in Alaska and after the MSF course riding the Street 500’s, I started looking at the Breakout 114 and the FatBoy’s again.
The local dealer didn’t have a breakout in stock and it would be awhile before he had one that was not already reserved. Looked at the FatBoy with the 114 in it, the Road King Special and the Road Glide Special. Took the Road King out for a spin and then road the Road Glide back to the dealership from the turnaround point. Loved the Road King, nice and nimble with the bags, and I wasn’t really looking at a bagger at the time. The Road Glide took more effort to control and after quite a bit of thinking, I figured the Road Glide would probably be the smartest and safest choice for me. It would keep me out of the most trouble. So I purchased a 2019 Road Glide Special in the Industrial Gray Denim. Like I said, I was never into baggers, but after having this one for 2 months now, I love it and enjoy riding it. Dropped the bike off for the 1k service a couple weeks ago while I was gone and have only ridden it once since I got back. I don’t ride in the rain unless I have a choice, really don’t like seeing the girl all dirty and nasty looking.
In thinking about what Harley to get, I went through all the points that many people think about and it had crossed my mind to get a smaller bike and keep it for a year, but as I talked to a few people and watched YouTube videos and did some research, I figured I would just go for the bike that I plan to have for the long haul. Yes the RGS is a heavy bike and it took a while to learn to handle that extra weight, but I am getting more comfortable with it and I just love riding it. Each time I ride it, I learn more about riding the bike and how the bike handles. The only thing that is going to be bad is not being able to ride this winter due to the roads here in Alaska, they are bad enough to drive with a 4x4, don’t even want to think about trying to ride a bike on them.
I have started the upgrade process and will post updates as I do more upgrades to the bike.
