I have the 940 and they are a good shock and work well over stock.
There is a big difference in the 940 and 944. Both are 13" shocks that are built to sit at 12" , so you have the benefit of a 13 shock added travel with the looks of a 12 shock. After that they are different.
The 940 is a steel body , the 944 is aluminum.
The 940 uses progressives old dampening technology the same as the old 440, the 944 and 444 use the new frequency adjusting technology I believe its called FST (frequency adjusting tech) and is a changing or variable system that is supposed to adjust for the needs based on the conditions by sensing the road conditions.
If the price difference is not much the 944 is a improved shock. If you are getting into the mid $ 500 area look into Terry Cable or call Howard at Motorcycle Metal and get entry level Ohlins or JRI
