Overweight and under-sprung

That's just it. I'm a hefty feller, 6'1" 380. Thankfully that number is slowly decreasing but non the less. By myself, and 45psi the stock ride isn't horrible but definitely lacks. When 2up, it's down right miserable obviously due to the excess weight. I used to weigh more so I'm sure my suspension is happy with the decreasing load.

Anywho, the "boss" said enough is enough and gave the green light to upgrade (yeah she's a keeper, plus I get to buy dresser duals too, woohoo)... So I've narrowed it down to progressives. I've ridden a bike with them and WOW.

I only want to hear about progressives. NOT JRI, ohlin etc. I'm thinking of doing the 444 HD version. But where I'm debating is the front monotubes or the spring kit. What's the main difference that makes it such a price difference?? What's the install difficulty between them too? I don't want to lower the front either

I( know you said you don't want to talk about other brands but when I did my suspension 2 years ago I did extensive research 6 months earlier (when I was 375 lbs) including trying Progressives as well as Ohlin's and there was really no comparison (price either though unfortunately..).
I would tell you the difference was so extreme that if I wouldn't have tried the Ohlin 6's, I would have ended up buying a BMW which I never really was that into but I had decided that I couldn't run the RG the way I like to ride (admittedly very aggressive) and I would have put myself in danger. I have had the Ohlin's for 20000 miles now and they really are worth every penny even though they are definitely a lot of pennies...
Another great feature of them is that since I bought them I have lost 165 lbs and they were adjustable the entire trip. Not sure if that is the case with Progressives or not but if you are "on the program", make sure you check. The settings on my Ohlin's now as compared to a couple of years ago are night and day. If I couldn't have made those adjustments the shocks would have been anchors..
Really comes down to your riding style.

I know their great, used to be into quads etc so I'm familier with them. But I can't fork that kind of money. I was looking into the 944s but I keep reading they are too firm. I need something to handle the weight but still have a good ride. Progressives are adjustable too, so throughout my weight loss I can tune accordingly.

I would suggest you go to there website & check out the instructions on installation of either mono tubes or springs. Check in your HD Service Manual about the springs. Good luck.

Shocks

Would like to know what you end up doing .... Having the same problem I'm 240 and my lady is 150 so riding 2up the shocks felt like they were bottoming out. Added more air and it is better but still not like I want.

I cannot speak to the Progressive 444's but I have experience with the Progressive 440's.. The 440's were an improvement over the stock shock.. I'm about 250 and I preloaded them about a 3rd way down.. What I got tired of was changing the preload when going from 1 up to 2 up and back.. PITA... So I pulled them off and did the Monroe mod for less than 200 bucks..

If you want to try out these 440's (they are the 11.5") before you spend ya money on the 444's then you are welcome to try 'em out . They are just sitting in my garage collecting dust..

CNM that's quite possible.. Are you willing to sell them if I like em? We also need to get together for another ride like we did last year up here around Frederick. Plus I owe you lunch since you bought last time ha.

I really want to do the Monroe mod but it's not a job I can tackle myself.

Sure.. I'd sell 'em if you wanted 'em.. Or, I'd help you with the Monroe mod.. It's really not that hard.. The hardest thing about it is getting the old bushings out of the Monroes.. I finially drilled 'em out.
Yea.. I'm good with doing another ride anytime..
