Help with my Ohlins

I'm riding a '11 RG ultra. I have a set of Ohlin #3's that I purchased from Motorcycle Metal a couple of years ago, I also had the progressive mono tubes put in the front. When I have the tour pack off and riding solo (205 lbs) the bike feels and rides great, the shocks are set at 15 clicks away from the bike (clockwise looking at the shock from the top). When I have the tour pack on and the wife (145 lbs) I cannot find the the sweet spot on the shocks, I've tried to go 2-3 clicks toward the bike but it either feels too hard (the rear end jumps) or to soft (feels like is wallows). The rear never feels like it bottoms out solo but two up it will bottom out on pot holes. Bottoming out the shock is the thing that really is confusing.

Here are my questions for those of you with Ohlins or Ohlin experience;
1. do I need to change the pre-load (Howard told me not to mess with this setting)
2. what settings are others running two up and solo

Tried to research the web on Ohlins but I'm confused as to the solution and would appreciate any help or advice. Frustrated to the point that I'm tired of messing with them and ready to pull them off and go with something simpler. Thanks in advance.

Garage
Why not give Howard a call, you bought the shocks from him, I'm sure he'd be willing to help.

When originally setting up your bike to get it out of the garage you should just keep the settings per PDF instructions. As the shocks are breaking in, of course you need to re-adjust. I believe you are misunderstanding or interpreting the original directions incorrectly. Please call me tomorrow as I will be up and out by 7am (holiday, the 4th) until around 10pm. I will be there for you if you choose.
