Suspension questions

I have a 2007 and my buddy has a 2011. He is not a forum type guy so I'm asking some questions on his behalf and mine also. I haven't put enough real miles on mine to know good or bad on my suspension. But he has lots of complaints, the ride with the stock seat was a jarring ride for him and his wife. Kind of like a pogo stick slamming your spine into your brain. A lot of bottoming out. I've told him that many people have seemed to have gone with progressive 940's. So he's done that upgrade and he said it's gotten better but his wife still thinks it sucks. He's got over 500 miles on them already. He has them set with barely 1 mark showing, or the softest setting. He's around 220lbs and his wife is probably 100. I think he has bottomed out a little.

He's wondering if he's missing something. He doesn't want a stiff ride for his wife but he doesn't want to bottom out either. Would going to a softer spring help, or would he bottom out there too?

My question is, did this issue with stiff ride come with the new frame? I know my 2007 has not bottomed out yet and although I think it could be a smoother ride I really don't have any blaring complaints.

I swapped out the stock air shocks to the 940's a love em. One or two up and no complaints.

I am 190 and she is 140... I had set stiff our first ride out and needed to stop and soften them up... took less than 5min and no bottoming out and a firm but cushioned ride.

Waaaaaayyyyy better than stock!!

I would think he will need to mess with the settings until he finds the sweet spots... The 440's are good also... the 940's great.

So any thoughts on what results he would get if he went with softer springs?

Yes, he did everything he could with his air shocks before trying the progressives. and he does say it's like night and day between the two, he no longer thinks his skull is going to have his spine driven through it.

One thing to note, he is Ok now with the ride with the progressive, but his passenger still is not. She is still getting bounced around a lot. She has a sensitive back so a soft ride is really needed for her.

My thoughts are that he has his progressives set on the softest setting now for the best ride he can get for her. I think if he sent them in to get the softer springs put in it would change the ride and he'd have more room to play with the preload. Maybe enough that the bike wouldn't bottom out and be stiff enough for that, but softer on top using the full spring better? I've never been very good with suspension settings myself.

Perhaps they need to consider a different seat not just the shocks?

Of the shocks are a noticable difference it could be the stock seat just doesn't work for her... could be too narrow and not enough padding and support causeing pressure and energy to be obsorbed on too small an area... a larger seating surface and more support from the materials the seat is built out of would no doubt be an improvement also in addition to the shocks.

Just a thought.

You're right. I've mentioned that too. They did upgrade to a corbin already. I said it might be too hard and maybe need a gel pad or something to absorb some of the problem for her. I also said he might want to look into getting the pillion for the seat modified for just her. They are long distance riders and they have a big trip coming up this summer.

custom gel seat

a custome gel insert may be the way to go. My friend had prostate problems, and he went with the custom seat by rich's with a gel insert and all fixed. He loves it.

You or your friend should give Progressive a call and get there take on it before having them change out the springs.
