Rough Ride

Hello folks,

I just traded my Victory Crossroads in for my first Road Glide and my back is regretting it fiercly. Is anyone having a problem with the new 2017 coil suspension? I have adjusted the thing to almost every setting and it still rides like a log wagon. I had gotten pretty spoiled to riding comfortably all day and the farthest I've ridden this one is about 200 miles in one day. I'm hoping there's something wrong with the springs because if it's the norm...I'm in deep trouble. Let's say...riding isn't fun right now. Any help or advice is welcome.

Tracey

Hey Tracey. You'll notice that many of us have switched out factory shocks for aftermarket. SuperSohx and Ohlins seem to be the favored brands. When mixed with progressive monotube front suspension, the ride and handling are both much improved over stock. Do a search in the suspension section and you'll find all kinds of information.

Which RG do You have? The '17 Special coils are the first stock HD rear shocks I have been able to tolerate in some time. Visual inspection of Your rear shocks shows everything looks ok, I'm assuming? Try riding a loaner from Your dealer and see how the ride compares- that will rule out any problems with Your bike anyway...

That is my next step. I have about 600 miles on it and had it at the dealer the other day with 500 miles. One of the mechanics rode it and said he could feel the sharpness when it hit a bump. He thought it was because it was all brand new and stiff. I'm going to tinker with it for about 400 more miles and then when I get the initial 1000 mile oil change done, I'll test ride a different one to see if it's the same. I hope it is not or I let a magnicient bike go to ride a log wagon...

08 Zinc...Thanks for the reply. If I have to, I will change it out. That makes absolutely no sense that I should have to with the kind of money I just spent. That sucker should ride like a cadillac. Spend $25,000.00 so I can spend $$$ to fix it... Not a great way to start my adventure with Harley...lol

Hi Tracey; whenever I hear the line: «oh, it's all brand new and stiff» it's either someone lying through his teeth or one who doesn't know whether to scratch his watch or wind his a$$ (pardon my French). Unfortunately a lot of people think that a suspension needs a break-in like an engine. If the OEM doesn't work for you, buy some good aftermarket shocks like Öhlins or Progressive. It all depends on your riding style etc. The Öhlins are sport/performance shocks while Progessive have the 444 which are very comfortable with its FST-system.
If you are not comfortable with adjusting shocks have a tech (not the aforementioned dude...) help you out!

Let us know!

Well, then for your wallet's sake, leave this forum now. This forum gets people to spend more money on their bikes than anywhere else I've been. Seriously, many of us have the same gripe that when you spend premium $$$ on a premium scoot, you should not feel the need to immediately upgrade the speakers, the windshields, the shocks, the lights..... (the list goes on and on) Yet the Road Glide speaks to many of us in a way that makes it seemingly worthwhile to spend stupid money on.

How much do you weigh ? These big HD touring suspensions were designed for 250 pound riders. I'm assuming your not near that number, so your ride will be much harsher then a heavier person.
Aftermarket shocks may be your only answer. Call Howard at Motorcycle Metal , and he can custom build you a set of Ohlins for a fair price. IMHO, Stay away from Progressive shocks, if harshness is your beef.

'Don't totally agree, in my experience, sometimes suspensions have to "settle in" , "break in" or whatever you want to call it...

'Could be that the OP is just acclimated to a totally different Bike and he needs to "settle in" to a different platform? Could be that something is not right, defective with his particular Bike? Could be that some more (fine) adjusting is necessary to find the sweet spot??

At least the Tech is listening to the Customer and didn't pull out the 'Ol Standard Reply,,, Wait,,, Wait for it,,, "THEY ALL DO THAT"

'Think the OP is on the right track,,, give the Bike & Rider some more miles,,, then remedy if need be... If issue persists, 'would go back to same Dealer / Tech...
