Hiding the whip antenna

I read in another thread about how some folks had hidden their whip antenna along the frame and didn’t bother with the in-the-fairing antenna. I just installed a tour pak on my RG and now have to deal with the antenna. I really like the “cost” of hiding the whip along the frame. Can somebody who has done this elaborate a little more on the process? I didn’t put a lot of thought in to it when I was putting on the TP but a good routing location didn’t jump out at me. I’d like to give this a shot and spend the money on something I can’t fabricate myself. Thanks y’all.

Here is a good write-up on another forum where the guy had modded his street glide. Looks like a great idea that I will eventually get around to doing.

I did this and I did not do it the same as in the pictures from the above mentioned post...You do not see my whip at all. I unscrewed the whip, removed the wiring from the mount. I simply left the mount in place to be used later. I routed the whip along side the frame and inside away from visibility. The tip ended up in between frame and plastic piece that holds ECM under seat. I then screwed the whip to the cable and used a zip tie to fasten to the original bracket and one more zip tie to fasten to the frame mid way up the antenna whip. Very easy 5-10 minute job.

Cool Cheap mod

I realize you're lookig to spend little or no money on doing this, who can blame you, however, HD does sell a shorter FM antenna. I don't remember the cost exactly, I think it was around $30.
If you're not even looking to spend that amount of money and again, who can blame you, there are other much less expensive options to be found at Advance Auto or Auto Zone. I've read about members buying shorter antennas at the auto parts stores and they work just fine. Although, the antennas I've seen at the auto parts stores are indeed shorter, they are thicker in diameter than stock.

Good luck in your quest.

Mine had a shorter one on it and it picked up absolutely nothing haha.

Most want to do this to clean up the rear end of the bike.

Ive also heard many bad and good about the hidden antennas. Good thing i dont listen to the radio.

Well, I did it! Like some others I took the antenna all the way off the mount and ran it straight behind the shock-mount-cover thingy and then to the inside of the frame with the last few inches under the tank. Three zip ties on the antenna itself and then a couple more to secure the cable out of the way and voila! With everything back on it is totally hidden and I can tell no difference in reception. With this type of DIY stuff our there I'm surprised HD sells any of those in-the-fairing antennas at all. Thanks again.

I have also done this freeby mod. Reception in my area was slightly worse than with the whip or a shorty antenna form auto parts store. But I guess I have never got fantastic reception anyway. Both my cars get much better reception than the Harmen K that the MOCO sells.
