JL C5-650x or Hertz HCX 165?

Hello All,
New to this forum but certainly not new to audio on a Harley. I've upgraded my system at least 4 times in the last four years. (Yea my name is Keith and I'm an audio addict) Reading through this forum it looks like I have a lot of company. . .lol I've had some killer systems on my Bike but I'm never satisfied. Just when I think I'm done I roll down to Bike night and low and behold there's always at least one guy who's system sounds so good he forces everyone else to turn their systems off. I've been that guy once or twice. But as I stated earlier. Never satisfied. That said:

Presently I'm running: two Soundstream 520.D amps one in the fairing and one in the tour-pak. 100 RMS X 4 130 RMS X 2
With these amps I've ran the Biktronics Titan 2's the Polk MM651's the Infinity 62.11i's and the Kicker CS67's with the KS693 Kickers in my Hog Tunes lids. I went with the kicker system when my Polks blew. The Polk MM651's are notorious for coming apart at the tweeter. The Infinity's are insane and so are the Biketronics Hats (Hybrid Audio). Believe it or not The kicker system I presently have on the Bike sounded just as good as all the other speakers. clear as a bell running 80 mph over CFR exhaust. Who knew?

Now getting to the point of my post. My brother who also has an Ultra like mine had this audio shop install 4 JL C5 650x speakers in his fairing and lowers
Two Polk MM6501's in the pods and 4 5 x 7 JL C5-570's in the lids. Ran by two JL XD 400/4 amps and a Sony DSXS310BTX receiver. THIS SYSTEM IS INSANE! Never heard anything like it and I thought I had heard em all! Blows everything else away. Trust me. Now I've read through all the audio post on this forum (took me two days) and the speaker of choice on here appears to be the Hertz or the Hawgwired stuff. Now my question is: Can anyone here give me some feed back on these systems? I've not heard the Hertz or the Hawgwired but the specs on the Hertz look dam good. Not to mention their 150 Watt 4 channel amp. . . Until someone can convince me otherwise the JL system I mentioned is Number 1 on my list for my new upgrade. Thanks Guys! By the way I have no budget . . This is my hobby these days.

I would bet the C5 are better than the Hcx 165. A lot of the chopped bagger guys run the Hertz HSK Xl's . They are supposed to be the shit. I have the Hcx690 and Hcx 165 with a XD 400 / 4. Have not finished it up yet. Almost done.

Owns " One of those big wheel baggers" you can't ride

Man Let me tell you Those C5's are some of the best Coaxial speakers I've ever heard Bar none!! I was completely blown away by the SQ of these speakers. They are only ranked at 89.5 DB but these dam things get loud with no distortion and maintain SQ with deep bass and smooth highs. They are rated at 75rms but JL recommends pushing 150 watts to em! You can hear every instrument at 80 mph! They are a little expensive. but if you love music like I do they're worth every penny.

I was asking the same question a few months back. I went to Earmark marine in Lewisville Tx and was able to hear the JL's and the Hertz side by side. I actually thought the Jl Audio 6.5 marine speaker sounded better than the hertz 6x9. Both were very clear and loud. I personally like the idea of a marine speaker in case i got caught in the rain or washing the bike. Also the JL was cheaper.. Just my 2 cents.. Lot of other more qualified speaker guys on here..

Hmmm Have not checked out the Marine Grade JL's. I've found over the years that if it rains hard enough and you ride long enough in the rain Marine rated doesn't mean anything. No speakers are water proof. Now some are more water resistant than others like the imagine hats which are great speakers. On their website they have a video of a guy pouring water directly on the speaker. http://store.12velectronics.com/cate...ogies/Imagine/

Help

I am relatively new to the bike audio world but i recently got 2x HCX 165 front speakers for my 15 RG with a ken wood 400 watt 4 channel amp. I am getting serious distortion above half volume and definitely bad distortion when i am forced to max out the volume just to hear my music at 80mph and even then i can barely hear it. any suggestions?

Did you get the HU flashed for the amp, or get a magic box? Without one of those, you won't get the perferred performance.

JL C5-650x or Hertz HCX 165?

Here's my setup(2013 RGU):

Amazing sound! Had to have an alternate power source installed to run the subwoofer. So to answer the question, I really like the HCX line, but the Focals sound better. No budget? Go all out Focal. Bought marine speakers once, didn't like the way they sounded. Also had biketronics 6x9s. Had to send them back every time I got drenched. No cost, but very inconvenient. My alpines, Focals, and Hertz all get wet and keep on jamming.

Alpine cde149bt head unit-$200

3-Hawgwired RS 400 amps-$1050

1pr-Focal KS165, fairing-$600

1pr-Hertz hi energy 6.5, lowers-$250

1pr-Hertz hi ener 6x9, bag lids-$400

1pr-Alpine spr-60 TP pods-$130

1-Alpine SWR-8D2 sub in TP-$150
